A good sized and traditional looking pub, it’s in a very central location opposite the estuary and is split across two levels with a bar counter on each, although the upper one was not serving on our visit.

The lower bar is the more atmospheric of the two, with black wooden beams on the ceiling, some type of very old stone tiles on the floor and large nautical maps on the wall as well as a brass ship’s Engine Room Telegraph affixed to the floor and other nautical artefacts such as a barometer. Plenty of old jugs hung from the ceiling, and there were a few awards as well as some brewery paraphernalia. The upstairs room despite lacking some of the character of downstairs was still very pleasant, with dark wood panelling covering the ceiling, a mixture of red patterned carpet and parquet wood on the floor, and a wood panelled bar counter with dark wood balustrade above. An old fireplace was off to one side, and there were also a few arched stained-glass windows, making it feel a little ecclesiastical. Seating was mostly fitted and padded button back benches, along with a few padded tools.

Beers on tap were Fyne Ales’ Highlander and Jarl, whilst the cider was a slightly disappointing Inch’s Medium Apple and Strongbow Dark Fruit. Overall, this was certainly the favourite of the pubs that we visited in Oban.

Probably the best pub in Oban, this one is centrally located near the waterfront and is slightly unusual in that there is a public bar on the ground floor, with a slightly larger lounge bar upstairs. The ground floor bar was busy with a young-middle-aged crowd, whilst the lounge upstairs also looked busy with a slightly older crowd, as I peeked in. Both rooms have their own bars.

One of only 2 pubs in Oban to have multiple real ales (the other being a Wetherspoon's), this one at least had the feel of a proper boozer with plenty of history. The CAMRA website points out that banknotes line the beams. However, these appear to have been replaced with pumpclips.

Both real ales were from Fyne Ales - Jarl & Highlander.

I was tipped off that this place had opened again and that it was once one of the better pubs in Oban. Inside it's a small old room with a stone floor, wooden benches, tables and stools. The small bar is in a corner to the right. There is another room upstairs that I didn't investigate.
There are two hand pumps which had Fyne Jarl and something called Oban 1790. Sadly I ordered the latter not realising it was a dross rebadged house beer, probably from Caledonian as it was in one of their glasses. It was well kept but other than that had no merit whatsoever and wasn't worth anything like the £3.80 price tag. It's an interesting old building but I wouldn't return.

As at the end of August 2011, The Oban Inn still had its pub sign and beer adverts on the outside walls, but was, unfortunately, still closed.

I agree that this WAS the best pub in Oban, but when I tried to go back to it in June 2010, it had closed down. There were shutters on the doors and windows and it was surrounded by scaffolding. I asked in the Harbour Bar across the road whether it was likely to be re-opening as a pub, but the barman didn't know. Let's hope it does.

Really two pubs in one building. The lower pub is a local for many of the Oban fishermen. It is small and quite rustic. Upstairs is more plush and is decorated with over a dozen stained glass windows depicting local heraldry. The local mussels are particularly good and the selection of whiskeys is excellent. Standard beers and usually one or two real ales. Must see if you are in Oban.
