Pub SignMan left this review about Crwys Hotel

Located in the student friendly suburb of Cathays, the Crwys (Cross) is a decent sized pub that has just about kept a two room interior, despite much opening out. Despite the student target market, the pub has gone for a smart modern approach to décor, rather than becoming the sort of scuzzy uncared-for pit you often find in student neighbourhoods. It’s the sort of place the students can take their parents when they come to visit and as such it has a good few locals in attendance as well. The main bar area is partly carpeted with high tables and stools opposite the bar under folding front windows which look out to the main road. The walls throughout are painted in pastel shades and the lounge area to the left of the bar has some sofas and other comfortable seating in a decent sized space. Between the two areas, a juke box has been positioned on the partitioning wall, but there was blaring dance music filling the pub on our Saturday evening visit. A garden was accessible through a door in the rear left corner, and although I didn’t go out to explore, I could hear a lot of people out there when I walked past, so it must be fairly popular.
The pub has one of the wider selections of Brains beers in town, with SA, SA Gold, IPA, Bitter, Dark and Milkwood on handpull when we arrived. I opted for the IPA, which was a pretty poor drink, before reverting back to Dark which had served me well all weekend and didn’t disappoint here either. The bar staff were very friendly and helpful, with one barman manfully getting through our massive order and then helping us to sort out taxi cabs back to the city centre.
This is a good bet for a decent pint should you find yourself out in this part of the city. We enjoyed the lively atmosphere created by the younger crowd and most of us regretted leaving when we did, as we failed to find anywhere better in the city centre that night. I’d happily return in the unlikely event of finding myself out this way again.
