Classic three room local (* CAMRA NI listed), slightly away from the town centre by the flyover. The main bar is to the right off a porch with a nice arched bar back, a line of pewters hanging and comfy padded bench seating. Off left is a public bar which wraps round and has its own separate serving hatch. Gents toilets are a fairly unique experience. GBG listed, with three cask over four pumps; Wye Valley Hoperation, Muirhouse and Pontcanna. My Wye Valley was freezing cold but in good nick (NBSS 3.5) and I got chatting to some punters in the back room with their dugs. A pleasant stop and well-worth the walk over from the station. 7.5

As an old regular - in years gone by. It's nice to see this pub hasn't fallen foul of the "Modernisers". Yes it has kept pace with the years [to some extent] but still has that ageless charm I have always known of it. It was where I had my first pint back in 1960, and became my local - I lived on the Cornstores Hill, my parents had a grocers shop at no 2 Coedpenmaen Rd. Which was demolished for the new A470.
I live in Maesteg now and had not been in the Llan for 40 years until last year [2010]; it was like I had never been away, still the fantastic selection of carefully selected ales, and each one was a taste to remember, so I have to give it 10 out of 10. I will be back for some more.

An extraordinary little pub, which I haven't been to in years, but I made the effort as it is in the Good Beer Guide. I was taken aback at the bar, which appears completely original, and I confess to a weakness for this type of decor. I was impressed also by the selection of real ales, Brain's Dark and Bitter, Felinfoel Double Dragon ( these were the regular beers), and Tudor Skirrid, which is an excellent golden beer. The locals were friendly, which is novelty in these parts. Doubtless I shall be going back soon.
