Aged timber-framed Sam Smith's house although not quite as olde worlde inside as you'd expect, the flooring and some of the fittings are clearly not that old (it re-opened under Sam’s stewardship in 1983). Long and narrow, decorated in deep mustard colour with the bar halfway down. To the right is a set of maroon banquettes stretching round an opaque leaded lattice glass window. To left, beyond a new wood panel divide and up steps, is an area with a main room and a couple of snug-like areas with lots of what appears to be modern wood panelling. Styled as a haven in the ‘superpub ghetto’ and that is indeed true, with no music and interesting bar chat (the locals, I learnt, don't like Anglesey). Unfortunately there are obvious and immediate maintenance issues, with fixed plastic sheeting covering a partial ceiling collapse and obvious signs of damp elsewhere. Usual Sam's range with OBB on cask, in good nick and, unusually, at a sensible temperature rather than freezing cold which unveiled the finest example of it I’ve encountered. If you're in town it's worth a look. Oh and as for the name, a 'Murenger' is a Medieval term for a tax collector. So now you know.

The Old Murenger House is the last timber framed building in Newport and dates back to around 1530. It is thought that it became a pub in the 17th Century when it was then recorded as the Fleur-De-Llys. The current name refers to a medieval term for a tax collector. The condition of the building had detiorated to such an extent that it was on the verge of collapse in the 1970’s until the current owners Sam Smiths financed a major restoration programme. Today it proclaims itself as a “haven in a superpub ghetto” and it may have a point.
The medieval Tudor façade stands out against it’s more recently built neighbours with 3 overhanging stories and protruding latticed windows. Internally the pub is divided into a basically furnished front bar area with bare floors, paneled walls and low beamed, slightly sagging ceilings and a slightly more spacious rear section. The furnishings include an impressive high backed settle opposite the bar. The décor includes several historic pictures of town and also a selection of Welsh sporting legends plus a few framed Newport County shirts .
The beers are naturally from the Sam Smiths range with the Old Brewery Bitter available on hand pump and the usual low prices. Service was welcoming enough although it wasn’t very busy for our Staurday lunchtime visit.
The beers are generally the most offputting aspect of Sam Smiths pubs but you won’t find too much worthy competition in the local area and it is certainly worth a visit as a historic building.

Lone tudor building in the shopping precinct. A sam smith's pub selling the usual sam smith's selection. Handy for the train station.

Right in the centre of town in Newport high street, this is a little gem. Serving Samuel Smiths beers including stout and lager. This is a cosy little pub with a pleasant atmosphere and some great beer.
