Very much a locals' pub, unpretentious and unmodernised, mainly occupied by a bunch of regulars but friendly enough. Three handpumps on the bar and apologised for only having 6X left after a busy weekend but it seemed in good condition.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Prince of Wales

Old-school pub opposite the bus station, featuring a two-part interior separated by a single step. On a Sunday afternoon, a couple of tables were occupied by various older men playing cribbage, with the other punters mostly being marginally younger blokes (mostly good natured, but one being a bit of a nuisance). Dartboard and jukebox. Two of three handpumps in use, offering a 'house' beer from Goddard's (£3.70, and rather hazy) and Pedigree which I thought was a poor show from a Good Beer Guide pub (although the 'Cash only' notices I spotted later did make me think things mightn't be quite right).

To me this is a completely unremarkable corner local. It consists of a small rectangular single split level room with the bar at the far end and a TV Screen, dart board and juke box. The bar has three hand pumps of which only two were in use and had Adnam's Broadside and a house beer by Goddard's (possibly rebadged Scrum). I went for the Goddard's beer which was in good enough condition.
I think house beers are a pointless gimmick and Broadside is just about the only Adnam's beer I don't care for. It's GBG 2017 listed but I don't understand why the local CAMRA branch think it's so wonderful.

A basic locals boozer. Main room at the front, then up a step to rear bar to where the locals were congregated. Décor-wise it’s a bit odd - red trim and brick wallpaper(!), pub carpet and a load of flags out ready for the Euros. Noted a darts board and that loud Status Quo appeared to be the music of choice. GBG 2016 listed, there were three pumps with two on - Goddards Scrum and Otter Wotter Shot alongside Rosies Pig cider. My Otter wasn’t much to write home about, tepid and uninspiring. It didn’t feel like a particularly welcoming place either. It’s tolerable if you want a swift one between buses (Newport being the major transport hub) but I wouldn’t make an effort to do this one again. I struggle to see why the local CAMRA branch rave about it so much. 5.5
