The Pheasant is a Craft Union pub that was reasonably busy during a recent Wednesday evening visit. The pub has an old feel with sloped ceilings with large wooden beams that have been painted, however there is some exposed brickwork. Televisions for showing live football are located throughout and at the rear is a pool room. The bar counter along the right-hand wall supports standard and premium and I spotted two hand pumps, the 6X was off leaving St Austell’s Tribute as the cask option. To round off my evening I went for a pint of Stella that was politely served, and was cheap as chips coming in at £3.50.

I've been in quite a few Craft Union Pubs in recent weeks, and I like them as a pub group for the way they are kept and presented, and the beer is usually ok, even when there's no real ale. Here, all the above applies but the real ale was terrific. The young man running the place was as enthusiastic as all the C.U. managers I've come across, but he was also keen on his real ale: there was Black Sheep Best and St Austell Tribute, either of which would have been enough to keep me happy if they were the sole beer on offer. My half of Black Sheep was "in tip top condition" according to my notes made at the time, and as it's one of my favourite beers, I'd obviously come to the right place. The manager was proud that his real ales were cheaper than anywhere else in Newport - about £2.15 a pint; when I mentioned this at another pub in another town, I was told that you can't make any money at that price. But the C.U. business model is that the pubco looks after the premises (maintenance, rates, utilities) and the manager gets a percentage of the take and pays the wages out of that. So if it's quiet they just work the shift themselves and if it's busy they bring someone in, I guess. This was a good, well run pub and I liked it here, with the only exception that where I was sitting was dominated by some top quality loudspeakers pushing out some watts to my tinnitus-affected ears. (But I couldn't move seats because that's where the power sockets were for my depleted phone to recharge. Bummer.) The beer quality here was better than in the pubs run in Newport by Marstons, Titanic, Joules and (by a short head) Black Country Ales on the same day. I would certainly stay longer in this one if in Newport again.

Two side by side bars, to the left there's a four pull set up with Doombar, Harvest Pale, Everards Tiger and a blank, the other side is the same. Screens & pool at the back, inevitable grey paint job laminate floor on one side, new tile-like slabs next door. A bit of old exposed brick and ancient beamery suggest something has been lost here. A lot of built in bench seating so bit of a cheap makeover this time. Biggish garden out back and the usual friendly people found in Newport.

Oggwyn Great left this review about The Pheasant Inn

This pub is a bit of a jack of all trades , popular with students from the local farming collage and more mature drinkers , as you enter to the left is the quiter room of the pub with an old fireplace and a snug , plenty of exposed brickwork and old beams , to the right of the entrance is the livlier modern side , numerous large TVs showing sport and plenty of large sporting photos (the landlord is a semi-pro sports photographer)further on is a slightly plusher room that leads to the courtyard (partially covered)to the back of the courtyard is a former stableblock which has been converted to a bar with a pool table and more large TVs . The landlord has been here nearly 20 years and knows his customers well , there are numerous sports teams based here , football , rugby , cricket , hockey etc . The bar between the two front rooms has an eye watering array of shots , spirits and alcopops , six different lagers on tap plus the usual Guiness and Smooth beers , six handpulls for real ale (doubled up , 3 on each side of the bar) with Pedigree , Hobgoblin and Everards Tiger which was perfect even on the hot day of my visit . This is one of the best pubs in Newport with friendlly staff , worth a visit
