During a weeklong stay in Aberaeron I visited the Castle Hotel a couple of times as my visit coincided with the start of the football season and this is the only pub in the area with a big screen. Available from the polite staff working the jump was a range of standard and premium keg alongside cask Sharp’s Atlantic and Doom Bar. I found the atmosphere to be a bit strange as this place is a cross between a hotel bar, sports bar and café. However, my visits were pleasant enough and I even got into the spirit of things by having a muffin. This is a friendly pub/bar, but I probably wouldn’t plan on drinking here if there was no football to watch.

This Grade II listed Georgian building actually looks quite good on the corner of Market Street with its bold red external paint job and inside its more modern sports bar than traditional pub. There is a decent looking bar food menu but we didn’t try it because unfortunately the only beers on were Sharp’s Doombar and Atlantic and there were plenty of other eateries in town with different beer options. If there had been a footy game on I had wanted to watch during my week in Aberaevon, then I would have probably have chosen to return and suffer another pint of Atlantic to watch it on the big screen here. But there wasn’t and one pint of that a week is enough..

Recently refurbished hotel lounge with a circular bar area at its centre. Interior is quite swanky (has a an American deep south feel to it) but in an attempt to cater for all tastes - or perhaps in acknowledgement of the Harbourmaster - it avoids being too upmarket and markets itself as a sports bar also. Food is on offer, which looked pretty good to us. Real ale is served (hooray), I had an Evan Evans and jolly good it was too. Overall, a pretty good first impression.
