Graham Coombs left this review about The Windmill

A large and much modernised pub, divided up into numerous areas including some 'snug' sections, but all a bit heavy on the sports screens. Terrace at rear. Despite being a Greene King pub, it seems to have a healthy interest in cask ales, with a display of what's on and what is coming next. There seem to be two guest ale pumps alongside the GK regulars, which on this occasion were both serving Ainsty brews and very nice too. Actually not bad for a modern-type circuit/sports pub, but there are better offerings not far away.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Windmill

Large, multi-room pub recently refurbished by Spirit in a reasonably attractive semi-modern style. Has a rear extension and a patio terrace at the back. Heavingly busy when we walked past earlier on a Saturday evening but rather quieter a bit later on. On the downside, several of the real ales - from a total of six handpumps - had finished, leaving a choice of Greene King IPA, York Guzzler and Leeds Pale (£2.90).

A very average town pub that fills up on weekends and race days. This is a very basic pub with a lot of the flat packed decor that I don't really like that much. The beer selection is poor with four pumps on one bar and the possibility of there being more round the corner. None were in action do I had a very average john smiths. Passing a few days later there was Greene king IPA and IPA gold on the bar so I was not missing out on much.
This place is nothing to write home about, especially with a good selection down Mickelgate, not highly recommended.

Old Boots left this review about The Windmill Hotel

A well located pub at a busy crossroads on the route between the station and the racecourse and close to Micklegate Bar hence its popularity with racegoers, the multiple big screens are popular with fans of other sports. Now a U shaped pub as only vestigial walls remain in many parts. The long front bar has a dining area to the right furnished with tables and chairs. To the left the pub goes back much further and ends at a patio with many separate spaces in between, some being sofa furnished booths. The front barcounter has two pulls but the counter in the back room has a couple more, a blackboard on the counter listed the three cask beers on that day in addition to the Black Sheep Bitter, the most interesting being from Revolution. T-bars provide the usual mainstream keg beers. The counter itself is finished with leather clad bump bars Michelin Man style, and the whole place is decorated in relentless modern style with laminate floors, tall tables and so on. Nice enough but lacking character. There is a 10% discount for CAMRA members which was advertised on a sign on the bar.

A Large John Barras pub located just up from York train station. 2 real ales and food served. The pub is very busy when the horse racing is on. Camra discount available.

Decided to call in as Ouse Boozer said they now had "an interesting range of beers available". If you call one an interesting range then you're disillusioned. The front room stank of something unpleasant which may explain why we couldn't find anybody working behind the bar. There were only two other people in the pub, so after a couple of minutes wait, with no sign of life, we left.

First time visit to this pub and it was an interesting layout inside. Looks as though it had been multiroomed but they all just opened out into each other. No doors, just large entrances from one area to another. There was a room to the right of the door set up with menus, and the other areas worked round the bar, but felt like separate rooms. Open plan lead to what appeared to be the entrance for carriages when it must have been a coaching inn. This was slabbed, but another area behind had a couple of pool tables in. All rooms were showing Cheltenham Gold Cup on TVs. Black Sheep Bitter and John Smiths Cask available. There is a conservatory area, and beyond that an outside seating area.

Aa established local just outside the city walls,on one of the main roads leading into the city centre, which can get quite busy on race meeting days.We called in at lunchtime on our yearly races trip outing and sampled the breakfast which was ok but nothing to write home about. In general the pub was not bad but thought the bar took up to much space. A word of warning if you use the Gents toilet be careful of the 2 steps en route.
