With the horde of Sunday lunchers confined to the main hotel part, the Pickwick bar alongside proved to be a good choice for drinking in this tourist destination. An old-school place with beamed ceilings and stone floors, with just the right degree of ageing and rough edges. On the bar were Theakstons Best and, from Camerons, Pickwick (presumably a house beer) and Road Crew which proved to be a very pleasant, almost fruity pint. A good option should you find yourself in Helmsley.

I visited the Pickwick Bar which is labelled separately to the main hotel but all part of the same building. This is a nice traditional feeling pub with low ceilings, wooden beams and pillars, and brasses. Sky Sports was on the TV but only on quietly showing the darts at the time of my visit, so unobtrusive. There were a few people in, mainly crowded round the bar, but also a table of diners in the seating area to the left. This was on a Wednesday afternoon in December.

At the bar were four hand pulls for cask ale, dispensing Tetley Cask, Black Sheep Best Bitter and Pickwick Pale Ale (by Camerons). I went for the Pickwick Pale at £1.90 for a half, and this was fine and probably the best of an uninspiring selection.

Perhaps not somewhere I would feel the need to rush back to, but I felt more comfortable in here than I did in the Black Swan.

Nice hotel, good food, and a proper bar attached to the side for the drinkers. A couple from Black Sheep on - including Baa Baa.

Juke Box appealing to the younger members of society. Until I get on it and load it up with Iggy Pop.

Nice place.

Well appointed North country hotel in Helmsley Market Place. A multiroom layout ,there is a more traditional bar, The Pickwick Bar, reached via a snug like room to the left on entering and a dining room to the right also with a bar counter. Drinking only is frowned upon in the dining room as the profusion of computer generated A4 notices will confirm. There is also a large function room to the rear. Usual keg offering plus Black Sheep bitter from the whizzy new light-up pump plus Tetley cask and “Feathers” a very drinkable porter / stout brewed for the hotel by the Yorkshire Dales Brewing Co, possibly a detuned version of their Yorkshire Penny stout. The public rooms are generally small and cosy, tastefully decorated although the tartan carpet clashes a bit. The food was pretty good and the service mostly sharp and efficient although the disappearing bar staff trick can be witnessed here. Locally made Mouseman and Beaver furniture, country prints and a relatively quiet atmosphere much in keeping with Helmsley itself.

This pub is situated on the market square of this picturesque town. It has an 'olde worlde' charm about it, and although i did not sample the food, the ale was very good. An interesting feature of the pub is the work of the famous North Yorkshire wood carver 'mousey' Thompson, whose trademark was a mouse carved on every item he ever made. You will find these in abundance, scattered all around the pub
