Old Boots left this review about The Tap & Spile

Traditional décor in dark woods, glass and a bit of tile although much of it probably started life somewhere else. There is a nice snug of good size at the front right with a larger bar beyond with a counter housing 5 handpumps and the usual kegs. Two from Rudgate (Mild and Viking) plus Roosters Yankee, Greene King IPA and Spitfire, the Rudy Mild was in fine fettle. The snug has built in benches, Britannia tables and wooden stools with a big screen and the bookcases with books, brass ware and some LP album covers. A few discreet old photos of the area complete the décor. The larger bar is more plain and has a raised area with tables and chairs at the back towards the heated patio. It's a few years since I was last in here but it's certainly improved and it's in the 2011 Good Beer Guide as well.

A 2010 Good Beer Guide entry and another that I always like to visit when in York. Raised seating area at one end of the bar, and a smaller room that used to have library style bookcases. The books have been thinned out now so there are ornaments among the books on the shelves. Beers still good, and we enjoyed Fox Beer Company Urban Fox and Great Heck Staggering Genius this visit.
March 11 update.
Still a Good Beer Guide entry this pub is now part of a different chain, but has not changed the interior, and still has a good beer choice available. We enjoyed Roosters Yankee and Wharfebank Tether Blonde while chatting to the staff at the bar. Chef brought out some great looking omelettes and he and 2 other staff members sat at the bottom of the bar eating them. No food yet available to customers - he was testing his menu for the summer season! Had a laugh with them though.

Unspeakably horrible pub since new management took over. Mediocre beer and ignorant bar staff. Toilets disgusting.
