Will Larter left this review about Royal Hotel

A proper village local which always seems to have some building work going on. It's very comfortable inside, with a friendly atmosphere. When we were here last Thursday there was an "open mike" session about to start, which may not be to everyone's taste. Most of the pictures on the walls related to Sheffield Wednesday FC, which again may not be to everyone's taste. Behind the bar there are two small picture windows giving a glimpse of the view down the valley. There are two hand pumps, one had local Bradfield Yorkshire Farmer bitter, the other (surprisingly) the very far from local Cottage Southern Bitter. This was a pleasant surprise as, for my taste, there are not enough beers like this in the Sheffield area's pubs.

I'd planned another visit today, but it coincided with their pre-Christmas carol singing session. I arrived to find several people stood in the porch - "Is this a queue?", I asked. "No, it's just too busy to get in", was the response. Judging by the number of cars parked on every verge in the village, and the volume of the singing coming from within, there must have been well over a hundred people inside. I'll return another time - but not on the two Sundays before Christmas.
