A decent pub and well worth a visit. We called on a Thursday and anticipated their 3pm opening. It was a good ten minute walk from the Fat Cat, but once there, you are happily refreshed downing a good pint of Sheffield Brewing Co beer. We met some locals and visitors and the conversation was non-stop, including the manager who was friendly and helpful. Eight ales on handpump, which included a few guests. I went for the Sheffield Brewing Co Crucible Best, Seven Hills and Brightside Brewery Dark Mild. Look forward to calling again.

Tucked away in the middle of a fairly grim post-industrial hinterland lies this little beacon of light. Severely flooded a few years ago, it has re-opened after a long period of redecoration and is nicely appointed inside with a conservatory and nice garden backing onto the River Don to the rear. The old boy behind the bar was pleasant and welcoming. Some of the interior décor verges on the whacky. Eight ales available (with four from the Sheffield brewery), I tried a couple but thought they were both a little under-par. A couple of proper ciders were also on. Prices were pretty cheap. Delighted to see a working bar billiards table so got stuck in to that for half an hour. A nice little place but the lack of sparkle on the ale quality holds it back from getting a higher score from me. The BB table will guarantee a revisit, nonetheless.

I decided to call in here for one final pint, late on a Saturday night and soon started to regret the decision when I found myself walking through a dark, post-industrial landscape that didn’t seem like the obvious location for a pub. But in amongst all the old warehouses there is a pub and thankfully it’s a rather good one. The carpeted front room has the servery to the left and a number of standard table and chair arrangements as well as a bar billiards table. It’s quite a compact space giving it something of a cosy feel. Old maps of Sheffield are on display, whilst some nice metallic beer adverts are also on show. To the rear there is a tiled floor space which includes a conservatory type area. Various bits of local history are detailed in frames on the walls and the conservatory looks out to the rear garden, which I didn’t bother to properly explore in the dark. There was a fair bit of pub merchandise on sale including T-shirts.
The pub is tied to the Sheffield Brew Co and they had three beers on the bar – Seven Hills, IPA X and Fifth Anniversary. Guests included Blue Bee Lustin for Stout, Brew Star Blonde Star Hafod Hafod Sun and Hopper and Raw Try Ale. I gave the Blue Bee a try and thought it was a decent pint of stout although I was reaching the point at which my palate becomes pretty unreliable.
It’s a strange sort of pub that feels completely out of place, but I got a warm welcome and thought the beer selection makes it worth searching out – perhaps in broad daylight next time though!

Originally a shabby pub in terminal decline the Gardeners was bought by Sheffield Brewing Co and is now a bit of a destination pub. Two smallish rooms at the front one of which has a bar billiards table. A large newly built conservatory at the rear, guarded by a female mannekin and a pleasant beer yard/garden that is obviously a work in progress. There's loads of weird and wonderful things out here. Plaster ducks flying up one wall, a model of an Indian chief, a fireplace halfway up a wall, sunflowers, riverside patio etc. It was a great place to sit on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Eight handpumps on the go. I had a pint of their own Blanco Blonde and a pint of Slightly Foxed Brewerys Slightly Foxed which was a bit tasteless after the Blanco Blonde. Nothing wrong with the way it was kept though. Friendly staff and decent service make this a must do pub to add to your Valley Of Beer crawl.

Love this place. Advert in local CAMRA mag Beer Matters shows opening times Mon - Wed 15.00, Thurs - Sun 12 noon. Had 8 ales here on Thursday, all in great condition. Blue Bee Tangled Up IPA, Blue Ball Tropical, Tyne Bank brewery Monument, Owenshaw brewery had 2, Golden Bridge and HX6, Red Willow Faithless III, Backyard BPA, and White Rose James Blonde.

Every time we go in the decor has changed according who is doing the displays for the walls.

Perfect, and so many new breweries coming in now. They are doing up the outside seating area at the moment.

Slightly surprised that earlier reviews didn't mention the fact that the Gardeners DOESN'T OPEN UNTIL 15:00 midweek. My visit (between trains) was 14:00, d'oh!

So glad to see this superb pub back in the 2011 Good Beer Guide after reopening in 2009 after the floods closed it for a couple of years. Always a favourite on Valley of beer crawls and never lets you down on beer choice and quality. Sheffield brewery tap so a good selection of their ales available plus guests. Check the board as there is a back bar with handpulls too. Lovely conservatory on the back. They host art exhibitions in the front bar area, and they have live musiic and quiz nights. Enjoyed the most beers here, Wharfebank Witches Finger, Wharfebank Wispa, White Rose Scary Blonde, Naylor Bonfire Toffee, and Liverpool Organic Simcoe.

Good to see this pub has reopened after the floods a few years ago. this pub is opposite the ling closed Stone brewery and has been a favourite of ours for a number of years. Did have a large conservatory extension a few years before the floods. Nice to see the same landlord is still there. Now a Sheffield brewery tap pub, has about 8 -ales on with a bar billiards table to keep you occupied. You can also sit outside overlooking the River Don. Well worth a visit if on the Valley of Beers pub crawl.

This is one of those baffling pubs Sheffield alone seems to possess; Situated off Penistone road, the Gardeners Rest is effectively based in the Middle of Nowhere since to the best of my knowledge no-one lives in the immediate vicinity, and most of the adjacent buildings are either empty or derelict. Its not an ideal location, which makes it all the more fascinating that it is home to a delightful pub with plenty of punters in. This place spent a long time closed following the 2007 floods but appears back to full fitness, with multiple Sheffield Brewery beers on as well as a range of excellent guests which were too numerous to try and list. My introduction to Bar Billiards in here was not altogether successful but the rest of the experience was top-notch.
