A small Irish pub, with a larger front room where the counter is to the right, there’s a small snug to the rear where Dublin songs were being sung on my Saturday afternoon visit and a tiny snug at the front right of the building. The counter has four pulls, with two beers from Kelham Island, a Thornbridge Wild Swan and a very poor Draught Bass, about as dead as that beer’s history. A T-bar of five supplies the lager and cider. This is a genuine Irish pub with Irish snacks, a range of Irish whiskies, a couple of big Guinness dual tap boxes and Irish customers. It has a hot box of pies and sausage rolls in a corner. Nice pub shame about the cask, probably best to stick to Guinness.

Starting from a position of not being over-familiar with this pub before the change of owner, I would rate it pretty highly. I always like multi-roomers with peripheral seating, little snugs and good ales. There was a rather raucous group in the back room, but this just added to the feel of a good pub. On the beer front there was no Bass on but it did have Ossett Blonde, Kelham Island Pale Rider and Titanic Plum Porter - the latter being very drinkable.

Will Larter left this review about Fagans

Reopened in March 2023 after the retirement of long-term licensees Tom and Barbara, whose tenure followed that of the eponymous Fagan. The new owners are a syndicate including a member of the Arctic Monkees and other local bar owners. I called in a couple of days after reopening to find not all that much changed, but it was difficult to look around in detail as it was pretty busy on Sunday afternoon. I went in the very small but empty snug just to the right on entering, which has fittings dating to a refit in 1953 (as detailed and pictured on the pub heritage link below).

There were four hand pulled beers on the bar, and I went for the Bass - reputedly the only appearance of this beer in Sheffield. I was a little surprised to be charged £5 for a 4.4% beer, but I did note someone being charged the same for a Guinness. I think the Americans have a term for this: price gouging. (The nearby Dog & Partridge was selling the notoriously expensive Timothy Taylors Landlord for £4.40.) I was less surprised to find the beer only just scraping NBSS 3.0, as many pubs seem to struggle to get Bass right - a notable exception in my experience being the Station Inn at Derby.

The emphasis at the pub will be on live music, so I can add tinnitus as another reason for not making a special effort to return here.

I really took a shine to this one, but I guess it depends what you’re looking for in a pub. in this case it was hospitality, spirit and some of the best (impromptu) live music I have seen in years. The tiny snug at the right is well worth a look too. It really felt like a classic Irish pub, and it was impossible to leave. Beer wise? Moonshine, Tetleys and Landlord, all fine. My favourite of a stunning selection of pubs in Sheffield, and I wasn’t quite expecting that.

Fagans is a proper irish pub that used to be a Tetley tied house and it still has its Tetleys signs outside.
Once inside there are a couple of rooms i went in the room at the front which was decent enough and there were two real ales on the bar i had a drink of Abbeydale Moonshine and this was a very nice drink there was also Tetley bitter on.
I thought this was a decent pub to have a couple of drinks in.

This is a proper Irish pub without all the fakery of the likes of O'Neills. As you enter the bar is on the right facing a small lounge. There's another small lounge to the rear where an impromptu Irish music sesion was going on. The front lounge has dark wood panelling and prints of WW2 aircraft around the walls. There were two real ales on offer Abbeydale Moonshine and Tetleys Bitter. I had two pints of the Moonshine which was excellent. This pub is listed in the GBG 2010 but I suspect that they sell more Guinness than ale. It's a pleasant locals pub with friendly staff and clientele. Worth a short detour from the traditional beer crawls.

Initially this is an uninviting-looking boozer situated over 2 rooms, you might be expecting Gene Hunt and Ray Carling to be propping up one end of the 60's style bar. Only two ales on the go – Tetley Bitter and Abbeydale Moonshine (my Moonshine was in good form). There's some nice period features to admire such as the wood-panelling and plush banquettes; though parts can feel rather worn in places with a hint of better times having passed. I received a friendly welcome from the couple here have been in charge for a fair while - there's an award from 1989 on the wall featuring their faces. There was some slightly unusual piped music (sounded like Rene Artois belting out some lounge classics) plus a selection of daily papers and a book exchange. Food was available and sounded rather appetising but didn't have enough time to sample. Live music sessions were advertised. I caught it on a quiet evening; I guess this another one that relies mainly on student trade. Overall, it's worth popping in as it's a decent little boozer but don't necessarily prioritise it over others in the city pub crawl stakes if you can't fit it in easily.

Two Tetley Bitter pumps, plus Abbeydale Moonshine. Bar to right with nice wood surround incorporating lead-light stained glass panels, open lounge opposite bar, upholstered banquette seating & stools, trad wood tables. Rear room has an eclectic décor of old folk-muso photos and the pub offers folk music 5nts a week. Tiny snug to rt of entrance with seating for 6-8, and a small access of its own to the bar.
