Brainy Pool left this review about Horse & Trumpet

the pub has a lovely traditional exterior but inside it’s a bit of a rowdy sporty nightmare. The deafening combination of Gerry Rafferty, Sky Sports News and Leeds United fans briefly made me contemplate some very dark thoughts. it was probably just too busy today to enjoy. The real ale selection was bland. pub food menus are scattered around but seemingly being universally ignored.

A very good traditional pub. There were 6 handpumps on the bar with a cracking selection of beers. All were different and all were from breweries that were varied. The Toffee Mild from Naylor's was lovely. The other beers were from Salamander, Bank Top and someone I've forgotten. The clientele is a bit rough and ready but on this Thursday afternoon I thoroughly enjoyed this pub. Multi-roomed with a basement bit that I never ventured to. Down-to-earth pub.

Real Ale Ray left this review about Horse & Trumpet

A busy pub this one for the thirsty and hungry shopper, so patience was required to get served. Have to say the staff were quick and efficient. Four ales on handpump, we went for the Jennings World's Biggest Liar. Might enjoy our visit better when it's a little quieter. The pub still promotes cheap meals and beer prices are reasonable.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Horse & Trumpet

Stonegate pubco outlet that doesn't look much from the street, so I was pleasantly surprised by what I found within. On entering, you pass a screened snug on the left and a semi-open room with a fireplace on the other side. Bar and further seating areas beyond. Plenty of cheap food and drink offers. Six handpumps offering a reasonable selection of Tetleys Cask, York Centurians Ghost and Leeds Gathering Storm (excellent value at £2.60) in addition to EPA, Doom Bar and TT Landlord.

Old Boots left this review about Horse & Trumpet

I was glad to see this pub has had a bit of a makeover from its previous rather scruffy incarnation and some Victorian splendour has reappeared. Mostly open plan but with a snug to the left on entering, a dining area to the right and the bar, which is mostly devoid of furniture straight ahead, there is more eating space beyond the barand to the right. Nicely decorated with tongue and groove, open fires and a few pictures of Victorian theatricals as the famous City Varieties is behind the pub. As has been mentioned the atmosphere is very like a smaller 'Spoons but with better staff and staffing levels, this includes the same type of table “decorations”, cheap beer and food deals and even a curry night on Thursdays. This resemblance may explain its 2010 GBG entry. Unexciting cask range from Tetleys, Greene King (OSH) and Deuchars, my Taylors Landlord was sadly past its best. Usual kegs from Carling, Carlsberg, Stella, 1664 etc. The possible source of the name Horse & Trumpet and the link with the City Varieties is given on a board outside.

Roger Button left this review about Horse & Trumpet

This city centre pub is clearly based on the Wetherspoons template with its discounted beers and value for money menu but it cannot compete with the range and selection of its more illustrious competitor. That said, 5 ales were available across 6 pumps; Tetleys, Bombardier and Adnams Broadside being the regulars and Old Speckled Hen and Landlord marked as guests, not the most interesting selection but better than a poke in the eye given the prices plus quality was fine. The interior was split into 4 distinct sections all converging on each other in the middle of the pub and each with their own bit of character and a few original features. Note also the water tap on the bar – not a commonly seen these days. The muted plasma screens and various displays of local buildings all add to the ‘Spoons like feel but there was some fairly safe piped background music to break the silence. The customer base was on the mature side but didn’t emanate a great deal of class although the staff were quick to show the exit to some half cut old codger sneaking in for a free run at the loos. Service was excellent with the barmaid throwing away what looked like a perfectly decent pint before pulling a second. The food was a bit disappointing but for the money I can live with it. If you like ‘Spoons then the Horse & Trumpet will feel like a home from home but if not, you will find an average, functional but unspectacular pub that will not leave you with any great sense of wanting to return.
