As far as Wetherspoon's go this is quite good. I've been in before JDW took it over and they've made a decent job of the renovation. Busy and noisy on a Friday night, quiet and calm for breakfast. The rooms upstairs are compact but clean and easily good enough for somewhere to crash for the night. Dare I say (after being directed by a member of staff) the ladies' toilets were impressive (see photo, taken by my wife I might add) - a conversion of the old ballroom it is a big open area with chandeliers, a fireplace and some leather sofas!

Cask ales were Oracle, Copper Fox, Ducking Stool, Ruddles Best and Abbot. I'd stay there again but I don't usually go out of my way to go to a Wetherspoon's (because I like pub diversity or I'm a pub snob?)

An historic hotel now owned by JDWs.Plenty of wood panneling in this long and quite narrow bar area. Real ales are good and you have the standard JDW menu . Get here early if you wish to eat . The place fills up rapidly early evening and you may not get a seat. The food is better than most spoons. The staff were quick at clearing the tables ,which is unusual.
A really good effort.
