Upmarket bland place in Farrow & Ball mushroom shades accompanied by snooze muzak. Two ales; Doom Bar and Hop Back Crop Circle going appley (NBSS 1). Was it even Crop Circle? I had my doubts. Amusement provided by the dressing room screen next to our table; “I wonder if someone had an accident?!?” loudly exclaimed my companion, who’s less subtle than Bert Raccoon. “Yes, a small child was unwell earlier”, replied a sad-faced member of staff who had ghosted in behind us when we weren’t looking. I refrained from asking whether it was the Crop Circle that caused it.

Formerly Wilton’s, the pub reverted back to its original name in the 1990s and in so doing lost its reputation as a venue for royalty, senior politicians and real celebrities. Now it is a pretty average gastro pub, mainly aimed at diners although there are still one or two locals who drink here. The back bar has been closed off, leaving a single irregular shaped bar, mainly carpeted and blandly decorated in such a way as to hide much of the pub’s potential character. There is a small paved garden at the back, WiFi and irritating muzak. The staff are pleasant and friendly, the food is expensive but well cooked. Two ales on, Crop Circle and 6X, not that well kept but drinkable as long as you don’t mind a slightly off-taste. It all feels a bit twee nowadays and is no longer my pub of choice in Wilton, but it’s fine for a quick pint and a snack.

Currently closed - a sign on the door says that a new manager is being sought (it's a Punch Tavern. Of note, the other Punch Tavern in Wilton (The Bell) is also closed.
