Blackthorn _ left this review about Avon Brewery

An attractive looking pub just a couple of minutes’ walk away from the main canal area, it unusual curved and etched glass windows look quite inviting, and although we hadn’t particularly planned on trying this one, we decided to pop in.

Internally it’s all one long, single room and somehow seemed a bit more drab and basic than I was expecting. There’s dark wooden boards on the floor, padded bench seating along the left hand wall and high stools and tables to the right. The bulk of the wall was clad with khaki green wood panelling, with darker green timberwork elsewhere. A few old black and white pictures of the locale were dotted around, and at the front in the bay window were some large speakers and a mixing desk where it looked as though a band were in the process of setting up.

Beers on tap were Hobgoblin, Ringwood Razorback and Lancaster Bomber. Ciders meanwhile were Strongbow, Thatcher’s Gold and Kingston Press Wild Berry. Overall, whilst there’s nothing really wrong with this pub, it struck me as more of a basic local’s boozer than somewhere that is a destination in it’s own right, and it’s not somewhere that I would rush back to.

Regarding the pane of glass in the front window, well it was replaced with a clear pane rather than an etched one. The cost of this pane of glass was expensive, as it had to be commissioned, and the difficulty was in bending the glass into the right shape. This cost a staggering one thousand pounds and would have cost an extra thousand to be etched. Three pumps with two on, Marston's Power of 3 and Ringwood Razorback, we went for the Ringwood. The manager and a local chap sitting at the bar were friendly and chatty.

Unfortunately one of the panes of the curved etched front windows had been smashed at the time of my visit by some moron. It was however pleasing to hear from the barmaid that the pub had commissioned a replica rather than fit a bland clear piece in its place. A long carpeted main room, boarded around the bar area but with a smaller separate room beyond which unusually has light wood boarded walls. Mostly regular seating but there is one high version plus a pair of pews. Very friendly staff, I was even asked permission to change the TV channel to the rugby, I liked it here.
Not too exciting on the beer front, just Ringwood 49er and Razor Back but a lovely old style convivial pub.

The small frontage to this pub is greatly enhanced by the wonderfully etched glass bay windows, long and narrow inside, interestingly branded as a Portuguese restaraunt and traditional english pub, there was no sign of food on my visit but preparations were ongoing for a halloween party that night. The beer selection was a little wanting with just Ringwood Razorback and 49'er available, the latter being in decent shape. I quite liked it here.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Avon Brewery Inn

The sort of interesting old pub you just cannot walk past without wanting to nip inside to see what's what (although even the pub's own website is a bit hazy about how the place got its name, there being no sign of it ever having a brewery on site). The narrow rectangular bar is enhanced by the attractive bow window at the front. Separate Dining Room (not visited). Traditional furniture and decor. Welcoming atmosphere. Three of four handpumps, offering Ringwood BB, Marstons Saaz single hop and Ringwood XXXX Porter (in good form). Overall, worth a visit if in the area.

Selected as a wildcard entry on the crawl due to the enticing Victorian styled tiled frontage and curved bay window, this was one surprisingly decent. It’s a lot bigger inside than you’d realise from passing, a long narrow room with a burgundy and cream colour scheme along with a number of interesting pictures and cartoons to look at. The bar offered up three Marstons list ales – Ringwood Best and 49er, along with Banks UCB which slipped down nicely. As Roger mentions, there’s no brewery here, despite the pub name! To the rear is a more formal dining area though no-one was eating. This then gives way to a small patio overlooking the River Avon. Some good quality 80’s tunes were coming out of the speakers. This felt like a proper pub and I would be happy to pop back at some point. With some more imagination of the ale front, this could be a real draw.

Roger Button left this review about The Avon Brewery Inn

The pub name is a little misleading as there is no brewery on the premises and, according to the pub history on the wall, there isn’t much evidence that there ever was one in the first place. The pub itself seems to date from the mid 19th Century and still retains a few of its Victorian charms most ntably the exterior with its curved bay window and etched glass.

Whilst the interior has undergone some updates over the years, it still has a good traditional pubby feel. The front bar has banquette seating around the bay and a small open fireplace. Plenty of old pictures and mirrors adorn the wall alongside the brief history of the pub. There is a small anti-room beyond the bar and from there a narrow corridor leads to a surprisingly large extended rear section that is mainly for dining. Beyond this lies a pleasant beer garden that backs onto the River Avon with its retractable bridge that acts as an escape route to satisfy Health and Safety regulations.

The 3 ales available were Ringwood Best, Ringwood 49’er and Banks UCB, enough to satisfy the immediate demands for those looking for a swift pint. Most meals from the bar menu were around £8-£9 whereas a more formal evening menu is available with main courses around £10-£17.

The customer base is at the mature end of the spectrum and staff were friendly and chatty.

Whilst the pub isn’t generally a default choice for an evening’s session, it is certainly worth a lucky dip as part of a pub crawl.

Well worth a visit. Three or four of Marston's portfolio of beers are usually on offer, and in good condition. Very friendly with good food as well. Earliest reference to the Avon Brewery is 1867, when it was run by a Salisbury brewer - James Hole. That might well have given the pub its name.

The Avon is a narrow Victorian Marston's pub backing onto the river (with a suitably pleasant garden) after which it's named. Decent, no frills pub food is served at a reasonable price and there are usually 3 ales on. This weekends's Ringwood, while not my favourite, was well kept and very welcome. I tend to use this as a bolthole when the wife is shopping in Salisbury - it's relatively quiet and not too far from the market square. Well worth including in a town centre crawl or for a working lunch.

Soup Dragon left this review about The Avon Brewery Inn

A narrow terraced pub, in cream and red, with salt glazed tiles and almost church looking windows on the upper story and etched windows (Dorchester Ales)on the ground floor.

The interior has two rooms, the rear room, seemingly for food i didnt go in. The main bar room - long and narrow, is in dark red and cream with lots of prints and cartoons on the walls. There was a little tiled fireplace. The service was fine, the clientele mixed, friendly and it was quite busy. The music was mixed and at a decent level.

Beer; tap stuff, with Hobgoblin, Pedigree and Ringwood Bitter on handpull. The goblin was fine!

I liked this pub - maybe being a midlander it was nice to see a Marston's pub, but it had a good feel about it. Yes, i would go back.
