CAMRA Heritage pub - which in this case means a scruffy and whiffy multi-roomer. Corridor with side room right and main bar left which has been knocked-through somewhat and seems a bit disjointed but some interesting features remain. Pool room off rear and a tidy rear courtyard. Three Waddies cask, the usual suspects. My Horizon was closer to sunset, on too long and a bit stale (NBSS 2). There's probably enough to warrant a quick nose but it feels like it could be a lot more if an independent operator got a hold of it. Given the Waddies HQ is up the road you have to question their commitment to their estate.

A traditional, unspoilt town pub just off the high street area. The front of the pub is in a terrace while at the back is a small cobbled courtyard with a degree of privacy, which also leads to the front door. It may well once have been a coaching inn, but not as grand as the others nearby. There is a small snug on the right as you go in, while the main bar is on the right, with a poo room behind that. The main bar was heated by a small open fire. There are no frills here, it’s a good basic pub. The landlady was quite chatty, while the locals were friendly enough and there was a good atmosphere. The ale range wasn’t exciting – just two from Wadworth, 6X and Henry’s IPA, but both were in good condition. Also available were Thatcher’s Gold, Moretti, Guinness, Stowford Press, Fosters and Amstel. Worth a few pints for the historic value and I’d probably include in a crawl.
