A canal-side pub as described below. The front bar, that is the one on the road side, is slightly shabby, full of canal memorabilia, with a small bar counter in one corner. Behind that and up a few steps is the longer saloon, with pleasant views to the well-kept grassed back garden and canal beyond that. There is also a small games room with a pool table. The large car park is at the side. It’s a Wadworth’s pub, so not particularly cheap, and o this occasion there were only two ales on draft, 6X and Henry’s, both in good condition. There were two dry pumps on the bar too. The young staff were pleasant but not very efficient. Not bad as a watering hole when travelling by road or barge, and it does have its own moorings which is a plus, but it’s by no means the best ale choice in the town.

Having slogged up the Caen Hill flight of locks ,this is the first pub you see. Then you see the Wadworth pub sign, and realise that slaking your thirst here on real ale will entail some relative hardship compared to what you can get further in town. The landlord and staff are nice enough people ,the locals non threatening but it was just so underwhelming.Somewhere inside is a skittles alley, but otherwise it is quite featureless.

Mr. Blackthorn is absolutely right, the pub moorings are very welcome after the Caen Hill flight.
I'd imagine that the garden is a very pleasant place to enjoy a beer on a sunny day and the conservatory area at the back set out for dining also enjoys views of the canal.
Inside, the pub struggles for atmosphere. Perhaps because of the size of the dining area, perhaps because of the television showing Coronation Street - there just didn't seem to be much chat or much of a heart to the place on our visit.
Beers were from Wadworth's: 6X, Bishops Tipple, IPA and Horizon. None of these appealed after the locks so a Kronenberg had to suffice.
I wouldn't detour to visit but you don't need to if you're boating.

This is in many ways a pub of two halves. From the front it appears to be a slightly drab looking, brick built pub on one of the main roads out of Devizes. Persevere though, and you will find a very pleasant beer garden located right alongside the canal with views of the first lock in the Caen Hill flight. Posts are provided in the garden for boats to moor, and this must surely be a welcome sight for boaters who have worked their way up through all the locks.

Internally it’s clearly been refurbished at some point and now has a fairly contemporary feel to it with sandy colour tiles on the floor and grey paintwork. The main part of the pub next to the bar counter is fairly small and included an old tiled fire-place with a wood burning stove and TV in the corner that was showing a terrestrial channel, but with the volume off so it was not too intrusive. A shelf housed a small collection of trophies and such like. Up a few steps at the rear of the pub was a carpeted area perhaps more geared up for dining, and this led out to the garden. A number of pictures of the canal were dotted around the walls.

Beers on tap were all from Wadworths with their Horizon, Bishop’s Tipple, 6X and IPA. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold, Kingstone Press and Stowford Press.

The Black Horse is a largish pub on the edge of Devizes.
It looked as though it would be a basic type pub from the outside but it was alot different inside it was quite smart and was also doing meals,as usuall i had a drink of Henrys IPA and this was very nice there was also 6X and a seasonal on the bar.
