A posh, foody pub but not at all a gastropub in spite of its looks and it sells well kept, if a little chilly, cask beer with pleasant staff in traditional surroundings. The pub appears to have been converted from a row of cottages judging by the multi-level / multi area layout, each eating / sitting area has its own fireplace. The main entrance is from the car park leading into an upper bar area with counter and seating at tables and chairs, steps lead down to another dining area with counter, both counter faces have four handpumps and keg founts. Beers on my visit were from Black Sheep (bitter), Theakstons (Old Peculier) and two from Adnams, the collection of pumps clips behind the bar showed a range mainly from regionals like Marstons and Wadworths but also a couple of smaller breweries like Piddle, down in Dorset. To each side of this room are further eating and seating areas, the one to the left being at yet a lower level and finished in tongue and groove. The internal walls are mainly half timbered brick and decorated with cottage style plates, pictures and brass/pewterware and the odd horse accoutrement. Low beamed ceilings and small windows make the lighting very subdued and the candle powered tables probably help in the evenings, the constant musak is less welcome. There are daft drink related slogans painted on some of the beams. Attached to the pub at one end is a gift shop and village store.
