Will Larter left this review about The Robin Hood

My final pub of the day, which left me in a bit of a dilemma, having to choose between Pontefract's three railway stations, working out which train to aim for, judging how long it would take me to walk to the relevant station for the chosen train, and consequently how many more drinks I could have in the time available. This was made even more challenging because of the range of beers on offer, including five from Henry Smith, of which brewery this is now the tap. (The three others were Timothy Taylor Landlord and one each from Revolutions and Scarborough.) The beers I had came to £3 per pint after applying the Camra members discount and were in very good condition. There were a few other drinkers in at the time of my visit, mostly locals it seemed to me, and the young lad behind the bar was helpful and friendly. I had a little wander around, and found the pub to have all sorts of nooks and crannies. “Eccentric and characterful”, say my notes made at the time, with lots of pictures and plenty of hooks, on the walls and the bar counter respectively. Definitely the best pub of the day; so the best in Pontefract, obviously. The only downside is the fiendishly busy roundabout outside the front door, which means risking your life to get a decent photo.

Nice old fashioned type of pub, two cozy rooms front and back, with a side room off to the side looking a bit Laura Ashley although that may have just been the punters. The front room is in standard traditional pub decor and furnishings, and has four pulls, Taylor's being the only well known brand. The back bar is similarly appointed but the four pulls are all carrying beers from the on site Henry Smith brewery.

Re-opens 21.11.14 at 18.30, after a period of closure, owing to the cellar being badly flooded, earlier in the year.

Nice refurb 5 beers and 2 ciders on hand pull when I visited. Good prices only down side lack of parking but car parks 100-200m away. well worth a visit for a quality pint.

So glad to see this pub reopened as it was a favourite for me, my son and my dog under the last owners. Since the re-opening we've seen such a wider range of real ale and cider, and every week seems like a fresh treat! Families are starting to gather there on Saturday afternoons, as well as a range of faces never seen before as news of the quality of the beer spreads.

The Robin Hood re-opened on Friday October 29th 2010 under new ownership as a freehouse. At 7:00pm people were queuing outside to get in! They have several real ales (including Littlejohn and Magus which were in fine fettle. I haven't had the opportunity to try them all yet, but feeback on the others was very positive. The pub has been redecorated and feels much more "loved" than it did under the previous management. It's not a big pub, and so it doesn't need many people to have a good atmosphere. They also now allow dogs into the pub - a big plus for me personally. Opening hours are all day Friday, Saturday ('til 1am) and Sunday, and evenings during the week. I sincerely hope the real ale lovers of Pontefract give the Robin their whole hearted support.

This long standing traditional pub is a frequent Good Beer Guide pub. There are always Tetley’s and John Smith’s Cask available at the front of the bar. Around the other side of the bar are two Guest Beers. These arrive anywhere from East Anglia to Cornwall and Scotland. These guest beers are always available (until being sold out obviously!). Located at Town End, near to the Valley Gardens, all Wakefield, Barnsley and Doncaster bound buses travel past the door, though you may have to double back on yourself as the bus stops are about 100 yards away.
