Out of the way pub which, as noted below, is located down a cobbled winding road that passes round the back of an impressive mill complex. Slightly mimsy dining refit inside but nice enough, discrete drinking areas with some U-shaped fabric banquettes by the windows. Outside drinking area overlooking Hebble Brook which in retrospect I should have made a beeline for. Six cask, probably three too many given the location. 3x Tim Taylor, 2x Cooper Hill and a Milestone. My Cooper Blonde was serviceable but felt a bit aged (NBSS 2). Amusement provided via the fishwives recounting the latest scraps and gossip from the HX postcode area. Unlikely I’d make a point of schlepping out this far again but worth checking out of you’re new to the town. 6.5

inside is, as Mr Boots described, a rather bland foody pub serving a couple of local ales. That is the least interesting aspect of the pub. The real selling point is the benches next to the extremely tranquil gushing waters of Hebble Brook which makes you feel a long way from the centre of Halifax, as opposed to half a mile. I was very much at peace with the world here and never felt like venturing back inside with my Elland Blonde, even once the rain started pouring! the kids play area has murals of Super Mario and Spongebob, in case you’re into that kind of thing.

I won't add much to Roger's review although the interior is a bit of a surprise considering the outside and even when you're going down a few steps to the entrance, as well as the deep wooded valley it which it sits and brooding mill buildings looming above. Inside is decorated and set out as a modern mid range dining pub. There are some low beams, exposed stone pillars and a nice double sided stone fireplace. Otherwise a foody smell and that carpet detract a bit from your drinking pleasure. There are six pumps on the counter to one side, pride of place for three Taylors beers and along the bar three pulls for guests, Wainwright and Old Mill Bitter on this occasion but the Old Mill certainly wasn't GBG standard. The kegs are mid to high range. More a diners than a drinkers pub and I couldn't help wondering what had been lost and how long it will remain in the GBG given the competition up the hill at the Cross Keys.

First established in 1664, the Shears Inn has a quite reasonable claim to being the oldest pub in Halifax although the Ring O’Bells does try and get on the act as well.
Despite being at the far end of the town’s Real Ale Mile, it is not as out of town as you expect but it isn’t particularly easy to find being tucked away and quite hemmed in down a cobbled, winding road that passes round the back of an impressive mill complex. The pub is not far from the Shay, home of Halifax Football and Rugby clubs. The building and location is very quaint and it is interesting to compare the current building to the old pictures inside to see what bits have been added over the years and how the area has changed.
The interior is quite small and has undergone a relatively modern makeover but it certainly isn’t without its own charm or character. The bar itself is quite small and sited in the far corner whilst the windowside has 3 bays of banquette seating in what appears to be one of the more modern extended sections. There are beamed ceilings and an old central fireplace with a stove with old pictures above. Anyone familiar with Smith & Jones pubs may wish to avoid looking at the floor though! The jukebox was throwing out a choice that largely comprised of 60’s classics and there is a single well positioned TV.
The pub has a good reputation for its ales and for my visit the selection included 3 Timothy Taylor beers (Best, Golden Best and Landlord) alongside Potton Shannon IPA, Chirch Lane Poachers pocket and Goose Eye Chinook. The prices were very reasonable at between £2.60 and £2.90 depending on strength. Being a Sunday afternoon, the pub was in family Sunday Lunch mode and the food did look very popular with several reasonable special offers for dining couples e.g 3 courses and wine for 2 at £30.
There is a large car park and a few benches overlooking the adjacent Hebble Brook but you can’t help feel that more could probably be made of this feature.
As Halifax pubs go, the Shears Inn is a pleasant and interesting little place and should be near the top of the list for consideration if visiting the town.

Atmospheric and very cosy - good food and good beer. Not easy to find first time but well worth the effort.
