Popped in for a quick one, thank god I only had a half it was as bad as the rubbish purporting to be Taylors Landlord they sell in London and such places. The old lady was behind the bar and very polite, my companions were an old couple, the chap claiming wrongly he was on a bender - his wife putting him right that he was incapable of a bender these days, seated with a very odd friend; later two business types obviously just off the train and in need of libation appeared. I did my pelvic floor exercises between holding my nose and drinking the slops. Still got tart’s boudoir decor by the way.

Quite a bizarre pub this one, we called in here for a swift one before heading for the train. When we arrived in we met an elderly lady sitting at the bar, knocking back Gin. She would have definitely got a part in the TV comedy Benidorm. She was very friendly and told us that a couple of Turkish guys ran the pub.
We arrived in here around 5.30, when the disco in the front room started kicking off with 80's music. Then, a pile of women piled in from the station after an afternoon out in Hebdon Bridge, and then proceeded to party on.
Four ales on handpump, I settled on the Grey Hawk Brewery Nirvana Pale. Prices in here were reasonable and the pub has a friendly and jolly atmosphere.

We called in here on our way from the station into the town centre. The interior is quite a surprise after the mundane stonework of the pub's outward appearance. There are festoons of draped curtains in various shades of plush, striped seating clashing brilliantly with the striped carpet, and black chandeliers contrasting nicely with one of those glittery globes that flash reflected light around the room when there's a disco on. My mate's suggestion that it looks like it turns into a lap-dancing club later was probably wide of the mark, though.

The landlord was friendly and welcoming, and the beer was in good condition and reasonably priced. Four hand pumps offered a selection from Timothy Taylor Golden Best and Landlord, plus Copper Dragon Golden Pippin. The beer was in good nick and the décor has to be seen to be believed. I'm not sure about the cookery programme on the TV, though.

Originally a Georgian Town House, the Railway opened as a pub in 1868 and, as the name suggests, is situated a couple of hundred yards from the station on the way into town.

Being the penultimate pub of a lengthy crawl things were getting a bit hazy but I was made to feel welcome and on noticing various ale leaflets in my hand was afforded a quick guide to the town’s better pubs albeit I had spent most of the day visiting them already.

The interior is cosy, if a little dimly lit, with a central U-shaped bar, high backed banquette seating and a generally neat and tidy feel. To the right hand side of the bar the pub extends further back to an area with a pull across curtain so it can be used for functions. There was also a separate side room off to the right.

The beer range wasn't the most extensive around with 2 ales available, both from Copper Dragon, Black Gold and Golden Pippin, quality being fine and prices par for the area..

A comfortable enough place and whilst not one of the front runners in town, is worth popping in if you have time to kill.

The Railway has been awarded The Halifax Courier's pub of the year for 2012,although on my visit there was only 2 cask beers on out of a possible 4.Had a decent pint of Fred Trueman from the Copper Dragon Brewery which was served silently as the barman was to busy chatting on his mobile. The decor seemed a bit strange and can see it not being to everyone's cup of tea.

Very gay friendly pub just up from the railway station. Mirror ball, chintzy curtains and low lighting. The guys serving behind the bar were obviously gay as well. A mixed clientele though and a very decent pint of Copper Dragon Golden Pippin on the bar along with Scotts 1816. It's a decent pub is this, although it certainly wouldn't appeal to everyone. I'd have no problem calling in again for a last one on the way back to the station, which is what I did on this visit.

Old Boots left this review about The Railway

a back street, street corner pub with Tetley signage but selling a range of Copper Dragon's beers in excellent nick alongside the usuals in keg form. A bit of an odd shape, sort of l shaped but with curtained off rooms to the side and rear. The service was good as was the atmosphere, 1980s pop musak notwithstanding, the décor is tasteful rather than traditional although the furnishing is. As the name suggests it is very handy for the railway station.

Superb town centre Ale House with ideal location between the Station and the historic Piece Hall. Lively, friendly and always open. Accomodation available too.
