Busy but cosy Ossett pub on the western outskirts of Dewsbury.

After the disappointment of the West Riding Refreshment Rooms, I found what was to be my favourite pub of the day in West Yorkshire next up.

Different sections and rooms can be found around a central bar. There were very few seats available when I arrived and it continued to fill. A few were also sat outside, despite weather not being the best.

All beers were from Ossett and their associates. In addition to Ossett Yorskhire Blonde & Silver King, Rat White Rat & Riverhead Butterley Bitter, they also had Ossett Excelsius. They also had a couple of real ciders - Snail's Bank Strawberry & Lime Cider & Celtic Marches Wild Berries Cider.

Staff were reasonably friendly. The combination of decent ales, cider, cosy interior and friendly and welcoming atmosphere makes this a decent pub to visit.

A large roadside Ossett brewery pub a good few minutes away from Dewsbury town centre but conversely not that far away at all from the WRLRR if you take the right route. The two together make for a great combination. Seven ales and two interesting local ciders (Burnards and Udders) on my visit. The three ales I tried were in all good condition and competitively priced. The pub has a multi-area layout with a different feel in each area, presumably these were all properly separate drinking rooms back in the day. To the right is a small area with flagstone flooring and fabric banquettes in which I settled, decorated with old ale bottles plus black and white pictures of various professional celebrity Northerners. A larger area to left has floorboards and some tasteful brewerania. To the rear is a further area with a dart board, which leads out into a beer garden. Take outs are prominently available and loads of CAMRA mags from far and wide are available to peruse. It’s also a friendly place - the pony-tailed barman was up for conversation in between tasks and I also got chatting to a couple of elderly locals who had popped in for their afternoon drink. Be aware that it doesn’t open until three in the afternoon most weekdays.

I really liked this place and it has a lot going for it - would recommend missing a train to sample it…
