Large hotel bar with the bar in the middle. Pool table and table football to left hand side. No real ale that I could see.

The 1908 Sports Bar occupies the whole frontage of the Grand Hotel, and announces its presence with loud music, even on a Saturday lunchtime. I made my way up the steps anyway, as I had been informed that they do a selection of real ales. There are indeed four hand pumps on the bar, and the beers available were two from Black Sheep and one from Sonnet 43. The latter was ok, but not sure whether it was worth the hassle of the ferociously loud music. Football was being shown on two large screens, and there was a pool table and also table football. Not at all my sort of pub, and the beer was pricey at £1.60 for a half, so I don't suppose I'll be back.

I called in here more or less because the bus dropped us off outside. I had no idea what to expect because I had last been here over 30 years ago, and what a shock. It was a grand place, but the bar I went into was clearly a drinkers bar, and what gave me the biggest surprise was the handpulls there. They appeared to be showcasing Sonnet 43 brewery with 4 of their beers on, and we tried 2 of them and they were superb. The bar was very busy and football was on large screens in the bar, 2 of them on different walls, plus a TV showing the results on Sky. Not how I remember the place at all, but a place to visit for decent real ale.

The above was in September 13 and we called in yesterday in our quest for real ale. There were 2 Sonnet 43 beers on, a John Smiths, and Stables Beamish Hall beer, so a decent selection. Large screen showing football, and a popular bar. Separate rooms, but the ear splitting music could be heard all over and drove us out in the end. Shame.
