Old Boots left this review about The Cellar Bar

A lesser known stop on the Pennine Rail-Ale tour, overshadowed by luminaries such as the West Riding Licensed Refreshment Rooms one stop south at Dewsbury and The Station Buffet Bar in Stalybridge. Down a stair or two so I guess it counts as a cellar bar, the décor in the stripped brick room is from odd bits of railway porn, pictures and a set of photos of England rugby teams. It has a pool table to the back and a fair few machines, there’s also a piano with a darts board above it. As well as excellent beer, it is back in the GBG after a short absence, it serves posh crisps including pheasant and grouse flavoured ones.

The Cellar Bar is situated right outside Batley train station,so very handy if getting off a train or in my case waiting for a train.
Once inside there is a smallish irregular shaped room with the bar on the left side, the room has a stone floor, the seating is bench type and small stools, there was a darts board to the rear right.
There were about five real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Copper Dragon Golden Pippin which went down very well, the other beers i noted were Everards Tiger and Titanic Iceburg.
This is a very pleasant bar to have a drink in.

A tidy ale outlet in an area you may not expect to find one, apparently run by the same people who have the West Riding in nearby Dewsbury. Housed in the cellar of a super-looking old building (an old textile warehouse, apparently) it’s almost literally right outside Batley BR making it a very handy stop-off for a swift one. Five ales available on my visit; Copper Dragon, Black Sheep, and three Newsome ales. My Copper Dragon and Newsome Dark were both very good. The relatively unremarkable tiered interior has a flagstone floor and ceiling beams and the large old-school spinning globe was a nice touch. The crowd on my weekday visit were fairly young and I guess that’s why there’s a pool table available. A TV was rather pointlessly tuned into a crap game show that precisely no-one was watching - why bother? Beware that it doesn’t open until 4pm here most weekdays.

I found this to be a vibrant pub with decent beer and I enjoyed my visit - well worth combining this with the WRLRR at Dewsbury for a late afternoon/early evening rail ale session.

Another stop on the Trans-Pennine Rail Ale crawl. Exit the station and it’s just there in front of you. Fairly compact and irregular shape inside so it was quite full. Modern looking interior, flat screen TVs showed sport. 4 real ale handpulls offering 2 guests plus one each from the Black Sheep Brewery and Copper Dragon. GBG 2010 entry.
