The Southdowns is a Sizzling Pubs run establishment on the Felpham way in between Felpham and Middleton-on-Sea. It is a bus ride out of town and as far as I could tell there is little of interest nearby so this pub is more popular with local residents than holidaymakers. The doors open for breakfast at 09:00 and close every day at midnight. The cheap pub grub is available until 22:00; as an indication of price a standard burger meal is priced at £5.69. A children’s menu is available. Standard keg products line the bar that also supports three hand pumps. The Sharp’s Doom Bar was off which left Greene King’s IPA and Fuller’s London pride as the cask ale options. Drink and food deals are available throughout the week and members of the Armed Services can enjoy 10% off all purchases.
This is a large sprawling pub with tables aimed at diners in the right hand side where there is also a toy grab machine. The smaller left hand side is more pub like with a pool table and plasma screen for showing Sky and BT Sports. Regular live music, karaoke and open mic nights are advertised. There are also weekly quizzes on Sundays and Wednesdays from 20:30. Free Wi-Fi is available and functions are catered for by segregating off parts of the dining area.
Outside the front of the pub are some picnic tables that look over the road onto a children’s park with climbing apparatus. This road is very busy so young children would need to be accompanied if using this council facility. To the left of the pub is a grass covered area lined with picnic tables and there is a smoking shelter. Beyond this seating area is a car park.
There is a Sizzling Pub near to me in Eastbourne that my kids love going to eat at. I also enjoy it because it is cheap and the portions are generous. This pub is no different.

A "Sizzler" brand pub situated on a very busy traffic island so you can sit outside and watch the traffic jams. It attracts people of all ages and types. The early evening we visited it seemed split between elderly lady diners and lager drinking double glazing fitters, whose vans filled up the disabled parking spaces. An event we find more common and not only reserved by glazing fitters.
The place is easily accessed and all on one level so ok for wheelchairs.I was surprised to find three very good real ales here and the food cheap but quite good. Sizzler pubs can be a bit hit or miss so its nice to find a good one, it makes up for some of the not so good.
