This is a detached pub set at the top of a hill just off the East side of the centre of Walsall. It is now a Backyard Brewery pub. As you enter there is a door to the right for the Tap Room (public bar) and on the left for the Snug (saloon bar). I went in the Tap Room which has a wooden floor but is carpeted at the top. It all looks as though it has been recently been refurbished and there is a fireplace which thankfully wasn't lit on a warm December day. The windows have plastic sheets stuck on them to make it look like they have been etched. Personally I think they would have been better off leaving them plain but this is a very minor and picky issue. The piano mentioned below is still in the saloon bar.
More importantly there are four hand pumps in each bar which on my visit had two unused, five Backyard beers and Holden's Mild as a guest. Given that Backyard don't appear to produce a mild this seemed the most obvious guest.
I went for their Marynka IPA (£2.80) which was excellent. I thought this was the best pub visited in Walsall and would be more than happy to return.

UPDATE: The pub has been taken over by the Backyard Brewery. It remains the same Victorian cottage style, with bay windows flanking the central door, but has had its paintwork refreshed, being in cream with black. There is a small patio area. The interior is of course the same, but the decor has changed; green, arty pictures, dart board and a big mirror over the fireplace one side and yellow and white, a piano and a big mirror on the other. The service was great and the place busy with a mixed clientele. They still do food (but didn't eat). Beer; backyard cider and Pilsner on draught (with Estrella) and with Hoard, Blonde and East India Pale on handpull - there were three guest handpulls; Brains Milkwood, Enville Old Porter and Conwy California - the Porter was sublime. Definitely one to visit, again.

(Sep 2009) A small detached Victorian pub, in cream render and chocolate brown paintwork.

The interior has two rooms, a lounge, more laid out for food and the bar, that runs 'L' shaped around a central bar that serves both rooms. The decor is an mix of brown, green and white walls, with wallpaper as well!. The plainess is overcome with lots of photos of old Walsall. Has a dartboard. Music was supplied by the radio. Service is always fine.

Beer; tap stuff, with Chestnut MILD, which is really good. On handpull there is Deuchars IPA, Adnams Bitter, but also Blythe Brewery's Palmers Poison, which i liked.

This place is strange - i like it, but it depends on what time i visit - later on Fridays and Saturdays a part of the small bar is given over to karaoke set-up, or other music and it gets lively and loud. I prefer to visit when quieter - as it gets too full and hot. Worth a visit though

Now back open, and being run by a former landlord of The Pretty Bricks. Backyard Brewhouse ales on tap. Well worth a visit.

Recently they have been doing excellent value meals that have been pulling people in during the week nights. The food is great value for money and much better than what you would find in weatherspoons. the beers is good with a nice selection but the pub just feels too small for all the things it is trying to offer.

This was the last pub on my Walsall night out so I was a bit weary by the time we landed. It has its regulars but it's friendly. I had a pint of the local Backyard Brewhouse Hoard while my mates played killer on the darts board which is mounted next to the door where the smokers nip in and out. It's always OK in here and I was glad that it was just a short walk to the bus stop without having to hang around in the town centre bus station. I'm always willing to drop in here on an ale crawl of Walsall town centre.
