An interesting building that is listed. The pub is Georgian, but has been heavily modified in the Victorian period. It is a cottage style pub, with patio, that is attached to a Georgian styled former hotel building, which either was the (Old) Lion Brewery, or it was once located behind. The brewery was taken over in 1898 by the Tetley Walker Brewery (Cheshire); i am not sure when it closed. The interior has several rooms. There is a small snug to the side that has its own entrance (open weedends) that i couldnt see too well, as it was all dark. The old out door has gone and a side antrance allows access to the bar area. This is in cream, with a red tile floor and red bench seats. There is a small brick fire and a dart board. The TV had a music channel on and the other feature was the clock! A lounge is located behind. This is in brick, cream and beam and has a few prints on the walls and a TV. Another room, heading to the patio, has a dart board and is served via a hatch. The service was really friendly, i had a good chat to the lady behind the bar about the pub and history in general. The clientele are locals and it was quite quiet when i visited. Beer; no real ale, just the usual taps witha decent enough M&B MILD. This is a great little pub that simply lacks a real ale for my taste, saying that, i would happily return for a MILD.

Top watering hole! Can't speak for the food as I didn't try it but salt of the earth behind and in front of the bar. Really good pint and guaranteed a warm welcome. Only criticism, they need a pay phone!? Give it a try.
