The Fountain at Tipton is famous for being the headquarters of the bare-knuckle fighter, William Perry (1819 –1880). Back in the old days, when all fights were fought bare fist and in the open air, it was only the toughest that survived to take the prize money. In his youth, Perry worked on the canal boats and his fists ensured that his boat never waited long at the locks. He took up boxing and beat an opponent with such ‘terrific hitting with slashing round right-arm blows’ that he earned the nickname of the Tipton Slasher.
