Real ale has disappeared. Very quiet during the week but busy at the weekend with disco and karaoke and much needed bouncers on the door.

Called by yesterday evening but the real ale choice was uninspiring so I left.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Hop Pole

Larger-than-it-initially-looks pub close to the Central station, with a slightly split-level seating area at the front and the larger bar (with further side areas) up a couple of steps beyond. Fairly modern furniture and decor, but retaining a few older features such as the multi-coloured upper window panes and the main door, but all spooked-up for Halloween when I stopped by. Just two handpumps on the counter, with Old Speckled Hen (£2.60) on one and a reversed clip for Hobgoblin on the other.

I believe its been done up. Which is for the best as it was a dump previously.

The Hop Pole is made up by a seating area in the front of the pub and a bar which is found up a couple of steps on the right hand wall. This bar faces another seating area on the left hand wall and there are a few tables at the rear of the pub. Step free access can be gained to the bar through the rear entrance. My visit was at 21:30 on Saturday evening last week when the pub was comfortably busy with a crowd that were enjoying a karaoke disco that was set up by the front entrance. There are a couple of plasma screens that were off and I didn’t spot any Sky Sports advertisements.
The bar is stocked with standard draught and I counted three hand pumps. They were all off, but Bombardier, Jenning’s Cumberland and Greene King IPA are available when not reversed clipped. I didn’t note any advertisements for food.
Out the back there are some picnic tables that face the shopping area.

This place feels like it has had some recent decoration and is clean, but I found it to be a run-of-the-mill high street boozer and the karaoke was brain splittingly loud.

modern lively pub with good beer, very close to the shopping area and a favourite on the pubcrawling route, nice staff with a relaxed atmosphere.
