Off the beaten track and surrounded by new development and building works, you have to take a little time searching this one out but it really is a gem. An old Victorian building which stands alone at the end of a short, stubby street, it certainly doesn’t look immediately inviting. Step inside though and you’ll find a cosy and welcoming little ale house, full of character. There are number of rooms to choose from – a large lounge area at the back (which appears to be an extension - the old back wall of the pub wasn’t removed so there’s the odd sight of a bay window dividing it from the other side of the room!); a public bar to the left (my favourite, containing a dart board clock) and a teeny bar known as the Donkey Box to the right – I couldn’t work out how to access this, but other scribes say that there is a door at the pub’s front serving this little area only. Five ales on the go, which were of a fairly mainstream nature bar the Slaughterhouse ale, which I plumped for (very good it was too). Real cider was also available. Pub grub was available and seemed to be popular. Plenty of tasteful brewerania dotted around (old Bass mirrors etc) and a number of coal fires on the go as well. The barman was a friendly chap.

I really liked this one and would make sure I gave it extra drinking time when I next return. If there were just one or two more eclectic ales on, this place would be a 10 for me.

Old fashioned edge of City Centre regulars pub, its a bit quirky with different little areas including the 'donkey box' st the front which is a tiny bar, looks like it used to be an off sales point?

It looks like it suffers from its location, surrounded by the concrete back ends and air conditioning of the shops and between here and the collar of the ring road. But its a nice building and adjoining developments underway may mean a new lease of life.

Had my first pint of Draught Bass for many a year and this was ok, quite tasty.

5 real ales, including a guest, in this case Slaters Top Totty.

Its ok, a bit different, not quite to my taste, but can't quite put my finger on why.
