Blue Scrumpy left this review about Hare & Hounds

More of a traditional pub than the new craft beer bars on York Road (the adjacent street), the Hare & Hounds has a fabulous Grade II listed interior and has an upstairs venue where live music is regularly hosted. Despite being a Wednesday night, there was an act warming up. In fact, one particular claim to fame is that UB40 first played here.

A couple of real ales from Purity are available. These were Mad Goose & Pure Gold. Craft beers are Beavertown Neck Oil & Attic Intuition. I opted for the Intuition, which was a decent way to round off my trip out to Kings Heath, an area that certainly has plenty going for out as regards to pubs and bars.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Hare & Hounds

Substantial, brick-built High Street pub which looks like it's worth a stop. Inside, you find the 'L'-shaped main bar with quite a few interesting features retained including a gantried servery, tiled walls, moulded ceiling and dark-wood partitioning. Furniture and decor is fairly basic and traditional too, except for one lounge area. Further back, and somewhat hidden away near the stairs, there is another smaller, lighter bar. Three real ales on handpump: Pure UBU and Mad Goose from Purity plus a 'house' IPA (OK, but badly overpriced at £4.05). On the plus side, this is still a thriving music and comedy venue, with plenty on by the look of the posters.

A large looking corner pub. A very impressive exterior to this place and the interior is also nice. Its not as big inside as I was expecting though. An L-shaped open plan room with 3 handpumps on the bar serving 2 Purity beers - Ubu and Mad Goose, and their own Greene King brewed beer. The beer was on the expensive side at £4 a pint. Still its a nice enough pub and though I'll never return to this part of the world I was happy enough to have been in.

Cannot add much to Soup Dragons review apart from at the moment there is only one room open at the moment with the other being refurbished.Liked the ceramic tiles and the large heavily wooded staircase.I think there was 3 casks available on my Thurs afternoon visit.

Top Pub - got everything. Great entertainment - covering every base from comedy to blues to quiz nights to household bands.

Great beer - UBU purity Spot On.
Plenty of History in a lovely building.

Pleasant, still traditional main bar, lots of tiling & natural light. The is a further bar at the back that has some less traditional aspects. A very pleasant place. 3 real ales - 2xPurity plus their own house IPA provided by Greene King (for some reason!).

Soup Dragon left this review about The Hare & Hounds

A smart looking Victorian/Edwardian corner pub/music venue in undressed brick, complete with clock tower, etched glass and with a patio.

The interior is an L-shape around the bar. The music venue i attended back in the late 80s was upstairs. The bar is in the green and blue ceramic tile look of the age, along with some white and one green wall. There is a molded ceiling and wood floor and wood bar. The area to the left, when entering via the main door has an incongruous sofa area (in my view), and the area to the right, with the green wall, equally, a few arty pictures while the rest of the place has a few old mirrors and a Victorian clock, along with pot plants and fairy lights (not illuminated at lunchtime!. Luckily, where i sat, took out the view of most of these things. The place did a bar menu, but i didn't eat. The service was fine, the clientele mixed and the music mixed and at a decent level.

Beer; tap stuff, with Staropramen and Leffe. On handpull there was Abbots, GK IPA and Purity UBU. I had the Staropramen, as i didn't really fancy the other stuff

I enjoyed my first visit here for 20 years, some of the decor is a little out of place - but that is my personal taste.
