General Staal left this review about The City Tavern

A fine 1901 Birmingham Corporation red terracotta exterior.

Two real ales on, Pedigree and Highgate Dark Mild. A third tap showed a 'Coming Soon' sign, but did not say what was 'Coming Soon' and a fourth 'dead' tap. I had the Mild which was fine, and for £2.00 a pint, I can't complain.

There are two rooms, a bar, entered from Bishopsgate St and a 'Lounge' tucked away behind the bar. I don't know if it has a separate entrance.

There is a 'stage' area in the gap you need to go through to get to the lounge or the Gents, so I assume, if they have live music or discos, there must be another way through.

The interior was rough and ready, but the customers and staff were very friendly.

There was an altercation in the pub when I visited when someone who had been banned tried to buy a drink and was refused. Needless to say, he wasn't happy.

However, I would be happy to pop in again.

Andy Ven left this review about The City Tavern

Popped in at lunchtime today, hoping to find some Highgate Mild but all I found was a row of empty handpulls and a choice of lager. The City Tavern is not currently serving cask ale, much to my disappointment. I saw one other customer which doesn't bode well if today was a typical lunchtime. I will pop back and update my review to see if cask ales have made a return.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The City Tavern

Visited last Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon and really liked it. Very traditional pub with great characters and the manager, Mark, is very knowledgeable in sharing our interest in real ales. Davenports IPA particularly good. Also the pub is kept spotlessly clean.

Another fantastic Victorian exterior. Several small interior rooms.

Visited on Saturday, when it was hot and the bar was filled with locals in various stages of intoxication, watching two local teams, as you would have thought from the squealing, Everton and Chelsea, fighting for the FA Cup. Maybe they thought Birmingham City were playing, as one team was in blue.

It was much better to go into the quiet lounge, where we were all alone, as the TV was in the bar. The lounge was nicely done out, great fireplace and Chesterfield styled leather seating.

Beer on offer wasnt too bad. Davenports Bitter and Spring Fever, as well as Highgate MILD - which is what i had. I thought it was fine, JB was less sure.

I would come back; it was just a bad time for miserable people like us to go. One has to worry though, as it is close to the fake-tan mile, if the chavs would be out in force after dark, congregating to cross Broad St, like wildebeest at the Mara River.
