Real Ale Ray left this review about The Alexandra Arms

The barman was friendly and welcoming. My London Pride was superb and the Abbeydale Deception was also well kept. We sat in the front room near the bar, which was comfortable enough. I thought the interior of the pub was drab and uninspiring. I would certainly revisit for the beer, but definitely not for the surroundings.

A detached pub fromed from what looks like two Victorian cottages that had been knocked into one, which is why it appears to be slightly curved. The pub is in cream, with some blue paintwork and has a nice beer garden at the back. The pub has a couple of rooms, the first being a smallish L-shaped lounge. This room is in cream, with some red and has fake beams on the walls. There is blue patterned furniture and mixed art on the walls. There is no TV and there was no music. It all feels in need of a freshening-up. At the back there is the Games Room, with pool, darts and skittles, and with a TV showing daytime stuff and jukebox. The room is in red and yellow. The service was fine, the clientele borrowed from Wetherspoons. Beer; usual tap stuff with handpulls that included; Byatt's Phoenix Gold, London Pride, Abbeydale Deception, North Yorks' Cerial Killer and Blakemore's Two Tone and Summit Special (decent). I just couldn't warm to this pub, although i am not sure why.

The Alex is something of a bastion of real ale in Rugby as testified by a number of CAMRA Pub of the Year certificates behind the bar the most recent of which is for 2003. The room into which you walk on entering the pub is a comfortable carpeted area with a number of tables but venture to the back of the pub and you'll find a large and cavernous games room which then leads into the garden. There's always a range of beers on offer including: Alex Ales Petite Blonde, brewed on the premises, Dowbridge Dark from nearby Catthorpe, Elgood's Double Swan, Abbot and London Pride. Unfortunately, as I've found on a number of previous visits, none of the above invited a session or even a second pint in most cases. A shame as it's still a good boozer but not currently recapturing past glories.

Generally unfriendly and grubby. We found it full of a group of regulars who shout and swear at each other, and the beer weren't up t'much either.
