Real Ale Ray left this review about The White Horse

Traditional style Steamin' Billy run pub, with the original bar area over on the left of as you enter, plus an open fireplace on the right and a snug, which is found through a door opposite the bar. The bar area led into a further seating area and another small room tucked away on the left. These areas had a quarry tiled floor and the woodwork has been brought up to date with light and dark grey painted woodwork, apart from the snug which was carpeted and had maroon painted walls.
The back of the pub has been extended to house a good size kitchen and dining area, beyond this was a small patio garden. The young manager and barmaid where welcoming and efficient when dealing with their customers. Four handpumps three on, two from Steamin' Billy, Billy Bitter and 1485, their guest beer was from Pentrich Shoot the Servant. I went for the Steamin'Billy Bitter which was well kept. This pub also had an extensive pizza, burger and steak menu.

Just to clarify a couple of things from below, Phillips & Moriarty were taken over in 1924 by a Burton brewery that was a subsidiary of Mitchell and Butler so ended up as part of the Bass Charrington abomination rather than the Watney one. Steamin' Billy started as a brewery but gave it up fairly quickly. Their old school beers are currently brewed by Belvoir.
As noted below this consists of a small front bar area which winds through to two other area with more seating. Steamin' Billy have done a good job on this refurbishment making it a pleasant place to stop.
The four hand pumps had the three house beers (Tipsy Fisherman, Best and 1485) plus a guest Letherbritches Lemongrass & Ginger.
I went for the Leatherbritches one (£3.30) which was in reasonable nick and the Best (£3.20) which was sour but replace by the landlord with one drawn straight from a new cask in the cellar.
Overall I quite liked this place.

A welcoming front bar greets you on entering, helped when we visited by a roaring real fire.
It's a comfortable spot and small enough to encourage general conversation. I didn't explore beyond in detail and, given it's dedicated to food, am unlikely to but the details are well documented below.
The pub is owned by the Steamin' Billy brewery which was reflected in ale choice: Stemin' Billy Billy, Tipsy Fisherman and 1485 alongside Adnams Lighthouse as a guest.
Steamin' Billy is a new brewery to me and, unfortunately, I didn't find a pint to suit although all were in decent nick.
A nice place to stop by on a chilly evening but I think that I'd struggle to stay for a session.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The White Horse

Now a Steamin' Billy Brewing pub, this attractive-looking establishment has a semi-modernised interior. The front part is furnished and decorated in an alehouse style, with a slightly more contemporary look to the two partially opened-out rooms beyond the bar. However, there turns out to be a whole other dining area further back which must double the size of the place. Four real ales available on handpump, with three of their own beers - including a sadly disappointing Tipsy Fisherman (£3.40) - and Adnams Lighthouse.

ORIGINAL REVIEW May 2011
A very traditional town centre boozer with glazed tile exterior and etched glass windows bearing the insignia of Phillips and Marriott ,a Coventry brewery I believe swallowed by Watney's.Once over the threshold, the small bar is to the left with three ales available in Hook Norton Bitter,Brunswick's Black Sabbath and Bass at a more than reasonable £2,well kept. There are a few seats by the bar,a seperate room on the opposite side and a rear room with a pool table, darts board ,flat screen, one armed bandit and a quiz machine. There was a very friendly welcome behind the bar,and gentle musak. The pub is well used by locals and there was no sign of food.
I liked the atmosphere and would certainly return for a few beers. On balance this seemed the best pub for real ale in town.

UPDATE

Steamin' Billy have taken over and refurbed the interior although wisely they have not altered the exterior nor the drinking areas to the front, with a real fire near the front door and a seperate front snug. The rear has been converted to a dining area and massively expanded to the rear ,incorporating a modern kitchen with a wide variety of dishes and a pizza oven.At the bar are 4 handpumps offering Steamin' Billy Tipsy Fisherman,Billy and 1485 Celebration Ale along with Adnams Lighthouse as a guest. The condition of two of the house beers was questionable on my visit therefore down a notch on rating. Maybe the move into food hasn't been such good news for real ale drinkers.

The Whiter Horse is a very nice looking town pub.
Once inside the front area was oblong shaped with the bar on the left side, there is a much larger area to the rear which has a pool table,a TV was showing the West Ham v Man City game, thee was some very good background music playing which included the Master Plan by Oasis.
There is a smaller oblong shaped lounge which is up a step to the front right, this room was carpeted and had bench seating and chairs.
There was one real ale on the bar which was Bass, this was a decent drink.
I quite liked this pub.

Soup Dragon left this review about The White Horse

An absolute classic from the outside. The facade of this terraced little pub, dwarfed by the neighbouring buildings, is in a white painted brick upper with a black dog-tooth string course and has a fantastic brown salt-glazed tile lower. Dormer and sash windows are above the two Phillips and Marriott windows that flank the central entrance.

The interior is actually open-plan, but has three clear areas all really in a split red and white wall, with white ceiling, except the lounge which had white wallpaper. The entrance takes you into a bar room, where the serving bar is. It has a red tile floor and a hearth feature that cuts this part of the room off from the lounge area to the right. This area is a little more comfy, with its carpet. The rear area has a chessboard floor and contains a pool table and dart board, with its own seating area at the back, fireplace and TV (not on). There are a few prints and mirrors on the walls, with a few silent TVs showing silent news at my visit, as the jukebox was playing general stuff and slightly loudly. The service was friendly and there were several locals around the bar sharing in some good banter and I was greeted on entry and leaving.

Beer; all tap stuff, with no MILD. Having read the Captain's review, I was looking forward to a beer here, but the three handpulls were clipless and lifeless. I had Guinness, which was fine, just a disappointment.

A superb exterior, a friendly pub with good banter, pub games and three handpulls - it seems like heaven - sadly, they had no real ale on them. Worth a pop into even without, but would be great with real beer (Greene King excepted, of course)
