A little old pub in a little old alley, which has almost completely transformed into a French restaurant. There are neatly laid-up tables with tablecloths, even in the courtyard in the back and presumably on the roof terrace upstairs although this was not visited. The substantial original bar counter remains though, complete with a few stools, and they are happy to serve drinkers there as well they might be at the silly prices, even for Richmond. The cask ales were Atlantic and Harvey's Best: condition middling. I can't say I'll be returning.

Tucked away down a narrow alley with small shops as neighbours, this is most certainly a gastro pub but just popping in for a pint is still possible. The ground floor is traditional with the bar to the left and dining tables elsewhere, lots of wood panelling. You may well be greeted once over the threshold, but one internal table is not set for dining, is opposite the bar and available for drinkers. You will also be able to drink at the dining tables if they are not booked, but at popular times this area does get fully booked. There are outside spaces which might suffice in good weather. The first floor is a dining room.
Two of the handpumps were drawing Harvey's Sussex Best and Timothy Taylor Knowle Spring (NBSS 3.5).I was dining ,and the food is restaurant quality from an interesting menu. Two courses £22.The staff are friendly and service was spot on....and that's why I would suggest that at quiet times you can enjoy a decent pint in upmarket surroundings.I will be back for the food.

Yes this is a gastro pub serving up market food and the main pub room downstairs (well described by others ) is complemented by a second area laid for dining in the Function Room upstairs.
And, yes if you are only after a pint then I would agree give this one a swerve, with possibly one exception, and that is if it is a fine weather day.
We were lucky enough to visit on a fine day during our recent mini April heat wave and at this time the small compact garden at the back and the more hidden decked roof-top garden patio either accessed from a stairway from the garden below or the upstairs dining room is really a pleasant spot to sit with a pint soaking up the sun.
At least it does serve Real Ale although sadly this was only Doombar and a passable Adnams Ghost ship and when sitting on the roof top patio you do get waitress service from the dining room saving having to go and get yourself noticed at the bar.

Not much to add to previous reviews. Definitely gastro-leaning, bare boards, wooden tables with elaborate menus on all of them etc. Otter (£4.50 a pint, but condition passable!) and Doom Bar. Plenty of staff on show, although it took several minutes before one of them deigned to serve us, even though there was only one other drinker propping up the bar! Disappointing experience, no plans to return in the near (or probably distant!) future.

In a pleasant setting down a narrow lane the Britannia is nowadays more gastro than pub most of the open space taken up by diners. There was some room for vertical drinking with two ales on, Butcombe Bitter and Bath Gem. Not really a drinking destination.

Just the two real ales on in here - Doom Bar and Twickenham Naked Ladies (£2.30 a half). I was in too early for there to be menus put out on the tables, but there was a menu on the wall outside. Main courses are £12.80+, but there is a "Workers Lunch" offer for £9.95 which gives a meal (the best bet looked to be the sausages and mash) plus a small glass of wine or soft drink. Not much use if you fancy a beer though.

The bar counter is on the left hand wall of this single room, bare-boarded, pub. A single incongruous, chunky tall table, with a couple of tall stools, greets you by the door but the rest of the furnishings are wooden pews and normal tables and chairs. One of the tables is a massive pewter topped affair. Wall decor seems to be mainly mirrors, and there is a nice tiled fireplace on the right. There are vases of daffodils and tulips all over the place, and this is the sort of place that wouldn't have fruit machines or others of their ilk as it would ruin the elegant ambience that they seem to want to achieve here. There's a small garden at the back.

I'm not keen on the beer prices here (£2.30 for a half of a fairly standard beer), but otherwise it's quite a comfortable enough little place. And they were playing a track by the Stones - local heroes of a kind. If you're not fussed about what you pay for your beer then it's probably worth dropping in for a swift one assuming you can find it.

Smallish, unremarkable gastro-reworking of what was a smallish, unremarkable backstreet local. Reasonable choice of ales if you're doing a Richmond crawl but no reason to linger.

Unremarkable pub situated on a small lane off the main drag. A single room downstairs (I note the earlier comment about an upstairs room but I didn't spot this), bar against the side wall with bench and stool seating around sanded tables opposite. A small garden area to the rear. A rather irritating soundtrack of some kind of "dance music" playing to no one in particular. Four handpumps, one not in use, St Austell Tribute, Sharps Doom Bar and Bombardier.
