Set in a prime spot in the market square. I would imagine this place would be jammed peak season, it has a large lounge and bar facing onto the square and was very comfortable. Two Adnams on handpump, serves food.

Roger Button left this review about Angel Hotel

The Angel commands a prime spot in the Market Place of one of the most unspoilt medieval towns in Britain but for some reason, despite its glowing reputation I have never really warmed to the place. Given the age of the building (it is thought to date from the 13th century but is known to have been first licenced in 1420) and the general Olde Worlde architecture present all around, the quite plain and ordinary decor doesn't really bring out the best of its historic features despite the presence of a few knarled pillars, wonky ceilings and fine fireplaces. The old Pub Sign is mounted on the wall in the main bar but there is generally little of interest visible. The hotel / dining ambience doesn't help with half of the main bar geared towards dining and a small room to the rear that also appeared to be diners only. Admittedly all my visits have only been during the daytime so how much is reclaimed by drinkers in the evening I cannot say. To the rear is a pleasant beer garden.

As for the beers, there were 4 Ales on my last visit, 2 quite ordinary (Adnams + Greene King IPA) plus Woodford Wherry (fairly common for the area) and a guest (presumably) I have noted as Maypole (didn’t note the brewery). On the whole the Angel is a pleasant, genial and hassle free pub, certainly worthy of popping in if you are visiting the town (which is highly recommended) but for non-diners it may be a bit of a disappointment. A sign outside reminds the visitor that it was the Good Pub Guide Pub of the Year in 1997 – these days it strikes me as more solid mid table than regular Champions League.
