Now modernised to a virtual restaurant. Real Ale removed. All illuminated keg font. A quick half of Guinness, £2.40, and on my way.

This is a really lovely building, an old traditional local that has had slight updates giving it a comfortable tidy feel in an old traditional way, a brilliant combination. I used to pop in a lot when living in Tamworth 7-8 years ago, when it was also Good Beer Guided for its excellent Banks Mild and Bitter.

Its not large, and is basically a square room around a central bar. There is a pool table at one end, which perhaps takes up too much space for the pub? It is very close to Tamworth Station.

It would appear from the comments below that the pub has gone through changes over recent times, and this shows in the drinks selection - one real ale - Banks bitter that was very poorly kept.

However, it really doesn't need much more here, usually I like a range of real ales, with ever changing guest beers, but here for some reason I don't think it needs that, I think it has a feel where all is required is a well kept Banks Mild and a Banks Bitter and this would be a fantastic little pub. Lets hope they could just improve the current quality and then this pub would be at least a 9 out of 10 for me.

Superb pub and one of rare gems in Tamworth. Proper Victorian pub. Excellent choice of foods. Two real ales on sale. Quiz night on Thursdays. Small car park behind the pub.

UPDATED: I have lowered my star ratings to one. No longer real ale pub, no quiz nights. From cosy pub to studenty pub. Usual brands (Carling, Guinness, Strongbow etc) Punk, Hip Hop music on Fri and Sat nights

UPDATED (19th March 2010): Now closed again which is not suprising.

UPDATED (17th Sept 2010) - Reopened but only Strongbow and Carling on sale. Fall from grace really. Once one of best pubs in Tamworth and now it is in bad way.

UPDATE SEPT 2009 - Now re-opened not visited yet though

UPDATE JAN 2009 - Closed will update if sold and reopens but not looking good at the moment

Cosy friendly local close to the railway station. Well kept ales and lagers and an impressive range of food including curries and home made steak pies which are packed with chunks of steak. Small garden and patio area and smallish car park
