Decent pub which doesn't open until 4 in the week. We arrived just after opening and the place was getting busy so it must be popular with the locals. A few beers, we had an excellent pint of MBH Bunji. Well worth a visit.

A decent pub which was well supported on our Saturday afternoon visit. The customer base was a mix of ages. It was good to see a group of young lads on our next table, out enjoying a few pints of cask ale. This was a comfortable and traditional style pub serving five cask ales. The line up on our visit was Wainwright, Banks Amber, Banks Sunbeam, Directors and Pedigree.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Star Inn

Very attractive village pub, both inside and out, which doesn't disappoint in any respect. Although partly opened-out and (slightly) modernised at some stage, the 'L'-shaped bar / dining area (part of which now lies behind a wood-burning stove in a substantial old fireplace) retains a lot of character. There is also a front patio that catches any afternoon / evening sun, and one of the regular live music sessions was just starting when I visited. Five real ales on handpump: Banks's Amber, Wainwright, Lancaster Bomber, Bath Ales Gem and a decent Daleside Monkey Wrench (£3.80).

Bucking Fastard left this review about The Star Inn

Attractive looking pub from the outside and a friendly welcome within.Range of Marstons real ales with very well kept Cocker Hoop.Didnt try the food but most other customers were eating and it looked good, and the mixed grill was seriously large. After 9pm The Star becomes a real community pub, darts can be played and there is a good atmosphere.Possibly the best pub in Penkridge.Original review 9/2/10.

UPDATE May 2011.
Still a good range of ales from the Marston's portfolio and the gut busting mixed grill among a limited food menu still there ,but the lunchtime airing of 4Music both on the flat screen and via the PA was offputting ,overloud and compromised the atmosphere even if it gave me the chance to be educated about Will I Am.Minus one points. However the authentic interior is worth browsing around, and the exposed timbers show the buildings age.

A welcoming exterior is reflected inside with a comfortable atmosphere and a number of original features retained.
We didn't eat but the menu offers standard pub fare and, it being lunchtime, people were taking advantage and the food looked decent.
Beer is from the Marstons stable with EPA, Banks Bitter and Mild, Jennings Cocker Hoop and Ringwood Fortyniner on. The Cocker Hoop was fine without being the best I've had by a good way.
As Mr Fastard mentions, the music is overloud and grated in this traditional boozer.

Soup Dragon left this review about The Star Inn

A lovely looking undressed brick cottage-styled building with timber frame and dormer windows in the market place, with a beer patio and rear beer garden.

The inside, while much altered, retains a traditional feel. It is U-shaped around the brick faced central serving bar, though the dartboard area is more or lass partitioned off. The decor is white artex with wall and ceiling beams and some white wood panel. To the right on entry is an open fireplace that part divides the room and there is a lovely tiled fireplace with wood surround at the far end, where one of the TVs is - showing Sky Sports. It has clean seating and tables. Victorian prints adorn the walls. The place does food, put i haven't tried it as yet. The service has always been very good here and it was rammed full of a mixed clientele at my last visit. The music was general and at a decent level.

The Beer range consisted of usual tap stuff, with Banks's MILD and bitter on cask, the MILD being very nice. There were three guest handpulls with Jennings Cockerhoop, Wadsworth 6X and Batemans XXXX - a nice change to the Marston's range

I took a liking to this place from the start and have been back a few times now. A must if in Penkridge

Ale Monster left this review about The Star Inn

This is a brilliant little traditional village pub that is owned by Banks’s (Marston’s). It’s a small one room half timber cottage type pub that has been an inn since the early 1800’s. The interior is open plan with a small bar counter opposite the entrance, a very large double sided coal fire place on the right which dominates the room and a second fire place on the left with ornate wooden mantle piece and mirror. In the back right hand corner is a large booth with a dart board on the wall at its end. On the wall between the double sided fire place and the dart board was a flat screen TV which was showing Formula 1 racing. There are lots of original low beams and old paintings throughout the pub.

Regular ales are Banks’s Bitter and Mild, Jennings Cocker Hoop and a single changing guest beer from Marston’s portfolio such as Brakspear, Jennings, Ringwood or Wychwood (GBG 2010). Coincidently this was Brakspear Hooray Henley (the same as Soup Dragon found almost a year before my visit) this is probably because it is a seasonal beer that is only available around this time of year.

A great traditional pub with loads of character which is situated in the old market square surrounded by equally old and interesting buildings, there are picnic tables on the pavement outside the pub and there is a small menu of home cooked food which I did not try. Its worth searching out this pub just to see the huge double sided fire place! I really enjoyed my visit and I look forward to returning soon.
