The Coach & Horses is a small no frills L-shaped high street boozer. The bar counter faces the entrance and minimal furniture; most of the tables were strewn with betting slips. In the left rear is a raised area that houses DJ equipment, it must get very cosy in here at the weekend. Televisions were airing midweek live muted football and the likes of Dire Straits were playing at some volume. The bar supports standard keg and one of the two hand pumps was badged with Sharp’s Doom Bar, which was off. After an initial sneer from the woman working behind the bar, who I took to be the landlady, things got a bit more polite. This place is a million miles away from the poncy Post House around the corner, however I think it may swing too far in the opposite direction for most.

A Craft Union house with two hand pumps, one of them with a Doom Bar badge on it. It was a lively pub, with a decent crowd of locals on a mid-week afternoon. At first the beer seemed to be ok, but with an unusual flavour to it that I had not encountered before in a beer and which became more prominent. Luckily for me I had asked for a half, but two of our group prefer to drink pints. One of them identified the flavour as butyric acid, which is sometimes referred to as baby sick, or less politely as vomit. I hope not to encounter this one again.

Not the best of pubs with Moorhouses Ice Maiden and Doombore on. Glad it was the first of my crawl.

It says cask ales on the A-board outside but none were on.

A detached cream and undressed brick pub, with small patio, that looks like an Edwardian gentleman's town house. Overlooks the river.

The interior is an L-shape around the serving bar and is on two levels. The decor is cream and red, with a couple of tiled fireplaces, as well as a dumb waiter. Sporting pictures and ephemera is the theme and there are several TVs with sport on and there is a dartboard. The service was fine and there were just a couple of other people in. There was no music.

Beer; tap stuff with Ringwood Boondoggle, Everards Tiger and a reasonable Timothy Taylor Landlord on handpull.

A decent enough town centre pub. Happy to pop in whenever. It had been a few years since my last visit.

A fine, busy town centre pub with a good atmosphere, decent beer and fair-priced food. The barman remains efficient and a bit grumpy, but that adds to the apppeal if no-nonsense is what you like. I came in here at lunchtime and enjoyed a well-kept pint of Everards. One other beer on (Wells). Not the most glamorous pub, but convenient, good value for money and devoid of the idiots who haunt other nearby establishments. Thoroughly recommended for a working lunch and a good place to include on a town centre crawl.

One of the most popular pubs in Stafford town centre, and a lovely pint of beer, very popular with the sports punters, the staff are very friendly and the pub overlooks the river at the back of the building where a special area has been set up so the smokers can have their Nicotine fix,
