Steve C left this review about The Bear

The attractive black and white exterior of the Bear suggests that this could be a decent pub, but alas I found it to be bland and very forgettable. The entrance leads to a street-level section with a couple of tables to the left and a pool table to the right that was being used by a group of young twenty-something lads. The red and yellow tartan carpet runs up steps that lead the rear where a bar counter along the left rear wall faces open plan seating. This counter supports Standard keg alongside Madri and two hand pumps, one of which was in operation drawing Bank’s Amber. This was served far too cold so tasted of little. On the bar is a massive cabinet of heated scratchings, I wondered how long the ones at the bottom had been in there. Televisions are found throughout, Sky Sports News was muted whilst some background music played. I don’t plan on revisiting here anytime soon.

Sold by Marstons as part of a large disposal in 2019 - was then owned by Admiral. According to WhatPub it was taken over by Proper Pubs in 2021 and no longer serves food. However, it is not listed on the Admiral Proper Pubs website, nor on the Stonegate Proper Pubs (Great UK Pubs) list.

An historic ale house, dating from the 17th Century, ruined. The exterior is attractive enough, but inside it looks and feels like a low-grade works canteen. The single long conjoined bar/dining area lacks appeal and has been stripped of most of its character. The burgers look unappetising and dry, and they don’t justify the prices. It was noisy, the staff were nowhere to be seen and there was no real ale. I left feeling a little grizzly and probably won’t be back.

This is very much an eatery place. The emphasis seemed to be on burgers and the whole place isn't pubby at all. That said, there are a couple of real ales available but to be honest, if you're looking for a pub go somewhere else.

This is indeed a burger place, but it's a bit more than that. They have a public bar stocked by Marston's and they also give a 10% CAMRA discount.
