I agree with Mr Aqualung that this place looked shut. Apparently you have to enter from the side, well I did anyway. Oncecin you have a multi-roomed pub with the walls covered in pump clips. The small bar had 5 handpumps on and they were not your usuals. An excellent little place.

This looked shut when I arrived at around 12:15 so I thought I would take a couple of pictures and continued to the Spoons. As I was taking the second shot I heard a furious tapping at a window and shouting. It was the Landlord who I later discovered had just got up, drawn the curtains back and saw me pointing a lens at him.
I returned a while later from the Spoons to find a fair crowd in and the landlord accusing me of being "the Papparazzi".
You enter to find a small tiled room with the bar on the right and a small room on the left with some sofas. Further back there is a small carpeted area. I missed the Jukebox but did hear Lynryd Skynyrd's Freebird cone on when the landlord upped the volume.
The bar had seven hand pumps with two unused, Whim Hartington Bitter, Hartington IPA & Flower Power, Stockport Stockporter and Nottingham Dreadnought. I went for the Flower Power (£3.00)
which was superb.
This is a basic pub, it's rough around the edges, untidy, the Gent's toilet is tiny and the Landlord is a character. Some people wouldn't be so keen but I'm a mug for this sort of place and it gets a very strong 9.

I like to pop into this friendly local pub while in Leek, and it was great chatting with the barman and locals. Multi roomed and music held often. The outside area at the back has a stage. Good choice of their Whim beer range and we enjoyed Whim's Flower Power and the guest beer from Raw brewery. They have real cider too, and a good jukebox. There were notices on the wall of famous people who had died along with names and an amount of money, and it seems locals pay £1 a week and there is a raffle held when someone famous dies. Novel. I think the amount of the "winnings" depends on the length of time between the deaths.

ORIGINAL REVIEW Feb 2010
Basic boozer with full range of Whim beers plus two guests.Very good juke box and occasional music festivals.Sadly on our visit the Flower Power ale had run out,but Hartington Bitter and IPA were very supable.Traditional interior but the totty always drift past heading for more upbeat looking premises. We found a friendly welcome ,yet the pub was quiet for a Saturday evening.

UPDATE
Glad this time to encounter Whim Flower Power (£3 for a well kept 5.3%er),the interior is unspoiled and the lower level room was functional with table skittles, darts board mounted on a door, flatscreen on a box,a paperback sharing shelf and wooden furniture.Well worn but in a good way,a proper boozer offering three from Whim and two guests.Chatty barmaid and friendly locals, always worth popping into when in Leek.

I really got on with the Whim ales here and could have done with a lot longer. I went for Whim Hartington IPA which was outstanding. This is a good ale drinkers haven, with a choice of seven well kept beers on our visit. I would have given a better rating, only that the toilets let the place down.

The Wilkes Head is a fairly basic pub that is a Whim tied house.
Once inside here there were bare boards and there were different opened out rooms to have a drink in,there were about four real ales on the bar i had a drink of Hartington bitter which was very nice the other beers that i noticed were Hartington IPA,Arbour light and a seasonal beer which i did'nt note.
This pub is a basic drinkers pub with nothing to attract any other type of customer.
