Quinno _ left this review about The Merchant

GBG listed for 2024 but with just the one on - Brains Rev James - in a sub-Wetherspoonsian interior, we decided to press onward and try the St Mary's Social Club that the Black Sabbath roadie landlord at the Newhall recommended to us.

Update: It has had a few name changes and, prompted by Just a Quick Pint's review below, I thought would give it a go. He is spot on, it is now one of those chain-foody places and it was mainly maturer people in. The service was fine. There are 5 hanpulls: Tim Taylor's Boltmaker and Landlord rotate with each other but have their own pumps it seems; added to this were Purity UBU and Salopian Lemon Dream, which happened to be the two guests in; while there is also a Titanic Plum Porter, which is a regular mine being ok. Now worth a look in.

Oct 2009: a 19th century brick terranced build, with part pinkish paint and the other half a dark wood look facade, with front beer patio.

The interior is open plan - also dark, mixing food tables with comfy kind of modern seats. I didnt see much else as the beer choice amounted to basic keg tosh, so i walked out. In the day its a mixed clientele place, but the couple of times i have been forced in on a night time, it is more younger based. It sums up Cannock really.

Not really my kind of place, you need a young 'uns impression of it here to get a fair review, but if you like real ale, forget it

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Merchant

Typical 'spoons-a-like Stonegate pub with a slightly split-level layout, semi-modern furniture / decor and plenty food / drink offers. Also has a row of metal patio tables out front. On the plus side, not a bad selection of real ales from four of the five handpumps: Landlord, Tribute, Salopian Lemon Dream (£2.85) and Titanic Plum Porter. The staff seemed fairly efficient too, making an effort to clear surfaces, etc.

An ok kind of place, fairly busy in the day due to its town centre location.
and busy but very young at weekends and can get some trouble!
Fairly expensive compared to the rest of the town and as such seems to be quiet mid week evenings and only busy on weekend evenings
