Blue Scrumpy left this review about Red Lion Inn

I wasn't expecting the Red Lion in Thorpe Hesley to be open. But as we passed by, we could see people drinking outside. We did an about turn and decided to give it a chance, noticing that it had been in the Good Beer Guide as recently as 2020.

The pub was clearly gearing up for the football. It was already very busy, with lots of people wearing England shirts and other kits. Some had some kind of armbands on, which was something to do with the football, but I'm not sure what.

3 handpulls are on the bar and all clips were turned around, which wasn't the best start. A young member of bar staff approached us and stated that they couldn't accommodate us, as they were fully booked.

Luckily, the landlord was also in the vicinity and he overruled this decision and asked the young lady to serve us, as we weren't intending to stay for the football.

With all keg beers, I ended up with a soft drink and didn't note the options. The main room had England flags draped over the seats. Beyond that were a couple of smaller rooms, also with TVs. Others were drinking outside on a patio. Music was far too loud.

This place certainly seems to have gone drastically downhill since its inclusion in the Good Beer Guide, but at least it has re-opened.
