custodian 42 left this review about The Friary

Huge cavern of a place at the rear where there is a pool table. Bar to the right and it's all keg, by the looks.

Steve C left this review about The Friary

The Friary is a thin and very long pub that stretches from the entrance on the high street to the beer yard full of picnic tables at the back accessed from St Mary’s Gate. Inside the pub a long bar runs up the right-hand wall and rows of seating run up the left-hand wall and up the centre of the walkway. Under the front windows are some sofas and at the rear is a raised seating area that includes a pool table. This rear area is also accessible via a ramp, as is the rear yard. It Takes Two was being shown on the television. Thankfully this was muted in favour of some background music. Sky and BT Sports are both advertised.
The bar is stocked with standard keg products and I counted five hand pumps. During my recent Wednesday afternoon visit two of these were unused and the two Greene King IPA pumps were off, as was the Sharp’s Doom Bar. A pub co food menu is available. This pub has strange opening hours as it opens at 09:00 (10:00 on Sundays) and closes at 21:00. I think the best way to sum up this pub is to say that it is comparable to a crap Wetherspoons.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Friary

Unbranded M&B (Oak Tree) town centre pub with a elongated split-level rectangular bar featuring the usual anonymous furniture and decor. Various food / drink offers. Still, it does do real ale, with Doom Bar and Bombardier (£2.35) from two of five handpumps (and usually Greene King IPA by the look of a reversed clip on another).
