After a couple of very quiet Sams pubs in Frodsham, this one was a bit of a culture shock- rammed on a Saturday afternoon with a wide range of customers. Very, very good quality OBB on cask and a nice atmospheric hubbub of conversation. The couple next to me were waxing lyrical about their organic lager for being “free of chemicals”. Maybe there is life in the Taddy empire yet, this one at least is in good form.

the calmer of the two Sam Smiths museums in central Chester. this one is at the top of Lower Bridge Street and is well worth fitting in your CAMRA coach trips to this area if you can put up with their ale. it's a time warp inside and it felt like being back in my Grans living room today as I sat surrounded by chattering old women!

The Falcon is a two roomed Sam Smith’s pub with no televisions or music and this SS has no dartboard. The service was polite, but I wasn’t a fan of the multiple signs telling punters what they cannot do. No phones, tablets, laptops, swearing, electronic cigarettes, drunkards or card payments. I was expecting a frosty reception, but who I took to be the landlady was polite. I didn’t see any food advertisements, but cask OBB was available.

One of the two Sam's pubs in Chester, this is a lovely Tudor era half-timbered building in the usual black and white colourings. The blue plaque outside says it was done up from derelict in the early 1980s and a fine job they did. Three rooms inside, the left one is quite loungey and was busy on our late evening visit. There’s then a mid-section public bar and what’s best described as a ‘banquette room’ down some stairs, all done-out in a ‘burnt cream’ colour scheme as mentioned below. Usual Sams produce, including cask OBB which was pretty good (NBSS 3.5), something not always guaranteed in their places. We propped up the bar and gabbed with the engaging and chatty staff who knew the Humph and experienced his eccentricities first hand a few months previously. A nice place, this one. 7.5

I have never really been a massive fan of Sam Smiths beers and as such have never really gone out of my way to venture into Sam Smiths pubs. The last one was over a year ago and my memory of the Old Brewery Bitter on cask didn't really leave me craving a repeat experience. However, fast forward to October 2018 and I find myself in Chester on a weekday. The Falcon is in my sights. I've done my research, I know it only has OBB on cask, so I decided to see what the keg options were. Keg beers are dispensed from those little illuminated square boxes which are quite charming (with the exception of one which was on a taller tap) and look reassuringly old fashioned. At the Falcon there was a choice of Extra Stout, Dark Mild, Taddy Lager, Alpine Lager, Pure Brewed Organic Lager, Sovereign Bitter and Cider Reserve. I went for the Extra Stout, which set me back £1.15 for a half, and was rather nice - and you definitely can't knock the price! Served in a Sam Smiths branded glass, head spilling over slightly, it actually looked like a thing of beauty.

Service was friendly, the pub was not busy at the time of my visit but I am sure with its prominent location and the age of the building it must pull the custom in without too much trouble.

They actually have a leaflet inside giving the history of the Falcon and its restoration, which you are free to take away, which I thought was a nice touch.

Overall a nice old pub, and I'm glad I called in.

Visiting the Falcon for 1st visit in years. The (boring brown) Sam Smiths bitter is in excellent form. After "risking" a half for £1, I have returned to the bar and shelled out £2 for a full pint (yes it was full!).
A very pleasant relaxing time in this old beamed pub. It made my breakfast and pint in Wetherspoons seem expensive.

Definitely an older worlde look and feel to this Sam Smiths pub and though there are better pubs for real ale nearby this but is still worth a visit. The 2 rooms are equally as good as each other and, though not a big fan of Sam Smiths beers I quite like this pub. Also I think its better than the other Sam Smiths pub, The Boot, up on the main drag.

No Old Brewery Bitter on our Friday night visit , it was back on on Saturday if in slightly below par condition .
Still the same mix of old dears young clubbers and everthing in between , i do like it in here and always visit when in town even if it could be so much better .

As the previous review mentioned, the bar staff are always busy, between the two parts of the bar but there's a nice atmosphere and it's a comfy place to sample a pint or two.

Personally, I love the Wheat Beer, served in appropriate Belgian-style glasses - really excellent! The standard lager is perfectly ok as well and it's all well priced.

There is now a good lunchtime food menu - we didn't actually eat there but saw a wide choice of possibilities, for next time!

Originally a 13th century building, it apparently fell in to disrepair and was renovated by the Samuel Smith’s Brewery among others back in the ‘70s. They’ve done a good job and this is now a decent pub just on the edge of one of the main shopping areas.

The main bar feels suitably “olde worlde” with a burnt cream colour scheme, polished wood floor, plenty of thick beams on the ceiling, stone support pillars, leaded windows and an old fireplace. The other bar is similar decor and has a bigger fireplace with a massive wooden lintel across it. There is also a carpeted area off of this.

Being a Samuel Smith’s pub, as usual the only cask beer was their own Old Brewery Bitter. The solitary cider was their Cider Reserve. Service was rather slow on a recent busy lunchtime, with just one barmaid trying to serve all the punters at both bars.

Seems to have gone downhill since my last visit , the beer was not as good(served far to cold)and the staff not as friendly as before (service was pretty poor as well) , still a few decent regulars in here but far to many people effin and blindin at the top of there voices , seems to have attracted a lot of drunks and drop outs , i like this pub lets hope it was just a bad night to visit
