A splendid 15th Century house that’s had a Georgian makeover, and has more recently been made open plan and renovated in a way that is entirely in keeping. The parquet floors and open chimney with a woodburner add character while the exposed structural timbers show something of the pub’s history and provide a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. Food is not cheap, but it is locally sourced, freshly cooked and very well presented. The landlord actually takes the trouble to make sure things are exactly how the customer likes them, a really nice touch. The car park is a bit tight to navigate as it has an outbuilding in the middle, but it has its own one-way system which helps. There are a few tables and seats on the car park next to the main building, but these are only really suitable for smokers rather than al fresco diners. There is a proper pleasant garden at the rear. Three handpumps on the central bar were dispensing Rev James, Otter and Stan’s Cider. I had the Otter which was in superb condition. This is a pub where I would happily spend time eating, drinking and generally relaxing, though if you’re intending visiting, check they’re open first.

Very good, spacious and comfortable 15th century village pub in a picturesque village, with a warm welcome and friendly service. Good restaurant with an extensive menu, if a tad pricy, and excellent, well kept ales - Sharp's Doom Bar (£3.15 and excellent), Butcombe and Exmoor Ale.
