Old Boots left this review about Ye Olde Custom House Inn

Venerable old pub at the bottom of Watergate Street, remodelled many times over the years I’ve known it. Two entrances leading to a single bar via the lower door and two bars from the upper one. The upper bar has three pulls and continuing round to the right is another largish rear bar with five pulls, only a trio of Marstons beers in each; Pedigree, Wainwright & an Hobgoblin varient. I didn’t check out the separate bar as it meant going outside and back in, it looked full of local codgers anyway. The main bars had a mix of ages and types as well as seating at separate tables and chairs, it’s a bit food oriented but not overly so. I preferred it a couple of reincarnations ago.

Ye Olde Custom House is an amalgamation of two adjacent houses, one of which dates from the 17th century. The interior consists of a small right-hand seating area, a larger left-hand seating area and a third seating area in the rear. These three separate areas are all served by a central bar and each has a plasma screen, which was airing the Chase during a recent Tuesday afternoon visit. Out the back is an advertised beer garden that I did not visit. The rear bar supports five hand pumps and the left-hand bar repeats three of these. A standard and premium keg range was available, but I couldn’t drink my Fosters as the stench of eggs caused my undercrackers to initiate a brown alert. I found the service to be very polite, but I wouldn’t return.

First visit here in a few years and nothing has really changed , fairly quiet on my thursday afternoon visit with just few couples eating inside and half a dozen or so enjoying the sunshine in the small pleasant beer garden .
Still four handpulls all beers from Marstons range , Pedigree , Hobgoblin , Boondoggle and a pleasant Marstons 61 deep .
Its nothing special but a nice enough place to spend an hour or so .

Like much of Chester's town centre, this is an interesting old building, or rather the amalgamation of two old buildings: one brick-built with white painted render below, the other made of red sandstone with a timber frame above. Also like many such buildings hereabouts, the floor levels are not congruent with street level, meaning that there are steep steps up from the pavement. Once inside, in the building on the left, there is a magnificent fireplace with a solid fuel stove set in it, then the bar which also serves the room in the other building.

Four beers from Marstons are available, and on my visit these were Jennings Bitter and Cocker Hoop, Marstons Pedigree and Wychwood Hobgoblin. I had the Bitter, which was OK but not as good as when I've come across this beer in Cumbria. It was fairly quiet here at the time of my visit, apart from the sound checks going on in preparation for the Motown & Northern Soul disco that was promised for later in the day. Seating was a mix of ordinary chairs and deep leather sofas. It was pleasant enough, but the Marstons range is so familiar that there's literally nothing here to get excited about on the beer front.

Modernised pub that has now been opened out in the main room and has a few tables and chairs and not much else to be honest. There's another room at the rear of the bar but we didn't visit that one. It's a Marston's house and there were two beers from their stable on the bar, Wychwood Hobgoblin and Jennings Cocker Hoop. The Jennings was a decent pint, but not totally top notch. It's not going to be a regular on our Chester visits, but it was very useful for a last pint when we came out of Upstair At The Grill at 10:45.

Another well run Marstons house this one. Well kept beers, clean and tidy, so well worth a look in.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Ye Olde Custom House Inn

Upmarket Marstons pub, located up a short flight of steps above the street. Refurbished in a modern style at the front and side but retaining slightly more traditional decor and furniture in the back bar/dining area. Tiny rear patio beer garden. Piped music. EPA, Cumberland, Hobgoblin and Cocker Hoop (in good form) available on handpump. Overall, not a bad place to get away from the crowds. (NB - Review dates from September 2011.)

This pub has had a recent refurbishment in the modern style , but thankfully has kept the old style layout , the large open plan lounge is now two seperate areas with the back now more given over to dining with light wood furniture including some strange semi circular bench seats , the front of the room is all leather sofas and chairs , as is the other room (which was once the bar) there are large trendy pictures on the walls of old chester , and a few display cabinets with some old nic-nacs on display . Four real ales on sale Jennings Cockerhoop , Ringwood Huffkin , Ringwood Bitter and Hobgoblin . I had the Cockerhoop and the Huffkin both of which were exellent , the glasses were etched with beer quotes , a nice touch . I visited at lunch time and there were a happy mix of shoppers , tourists and locals , the service was exellent . Overall a pleasant and comfortable place to escape from the crowds of Xmas shoppers for an hour or two

Soup Dragon left this review about Custom House Inn

An end terrace pub with a half sandstone and half black and white timber exterior. There is a beer patio at the rear.

The pub has two rooms, both sort of bar/lounges and served by a central bar. The first, open plan around the bar and goes the length of the building is in yellow and wood panel. The other room, which we were in had a traditional moulded fireplace, a small area with Sky TV, sofas and chairs and table mix, with wood partitons. Old prints were all over the place. The tables were used for food and a little grubby. Service was fine and the clientele mixed.

Beer; usual tap stuff with four handpulls, Pedigree (ok), Hobgoblin (ok), Jennings Cumberland Ale and Cocker-Hoop

A mix of traditional and modern that is fine. Tables were a little in need of wiping down, the beer ok. Worth a stop off.
