A traditional an attractive stone built pub in this very pleasant village, it was presumably a number of different rooms internally at one time, but has been opened out in to one larger space although a certain amount of walling and partitioning still breaks it up in to different areas somewhat. There was a decent crowd of locals in on our Saturday afternoon visit, including a few old boys propping up the bar. The landlord is apparently celebrating his 25th anniversary at the pub, according to a chalkboard inside which also listed other forthcoming events.
Décor wise it’s quite traditional, with old patterned carpet covering most of the floor with just a little wood strip around the bar counter. Wall coverings were mostly embossed wallpaper that had been painted over in either deep salmon or burnt orange hues, and a couple of old black and white photographs of the locale were dotted around. A number of friezes of old drinking scenes running above the bar was an unusual and interesting feature. A snug off to the right housed an old stone fireplace and a flat screen TV which was perhaps a little out of place, although fortunately this was not in use. A shelf running along the top of the wall housed a collection of sporting trophies and such like. A further plasma screen at the rear of the pub was showing a sports channel, but the volume was very low so this was not too intrusive. A small courtyard was at the rear. We did not inspect the menu, but a specials board listed Pork Belly or Pan Seared Wild Sea bass, both at £15.
Beers on tap were all chalked up on a board behind the bar which included tasting notes as well as other brews that were coming soon. The choice on this occasion was Otter Ale, Butcombe Original, JW Lees’ Founders, Black Sheep and Exmoor Silver Stallion. Ciders meanwhile were Haze and Gold from Thatcher’s, along with Hunt’s Hazy Days which was dispensed from a barrel racked up on the end of the bar. All in all, a decent enough local’s pub, but I’m not sure it’s one that I’d make a point of going out of my way to track down.

A former coaching inn, now a small town B&B and GBG regular. The former courtyard has largely been built on, partly by neighbouring businesses and partly by a pub extension which forms a restaurant area. The remaining garden is a lawn with benches, plus a garden bar. An unusual feature is that the fence at the end of the garden has been turned into a climbing wall to keep children entertained. Inside, the single Z-shaped bar is as Quinno describes below. The staff were a little vague, one barman more interested in admiring his car parked outside than serving beer, though the landlord is something of a perfectionist when it comes to his beer, which is why the pub's GBG entry is so richly deserved. Ales on this visit were Ruddles, Shepherd and Neame Shipyard Summer Ale, Butcombe's 42, Fine Tuned's Sunshine Reggae, plus 6 ciders. Well worth a visit especially during a festival weekend.

A tidy locals pub and perennial GBG entry, with a separate restaurant in converted from a bakery. The drinking action is in the right-hand, dog-leg shaped room. Pub carpet, red walls, darts, TV football and a healthy crowd in on a Sunday afternoon. Note the mural above the bar. Also some bar nibbles including roasties, which as strangers we were positively encouraged to eat. Noticed a sign for ‘pie of the week’ and ‘curry of the day’ which sounded good to me. Five pumps with four ales on; Hanlons Yellohammer, Gadds No 5, Butcombe Rare Breed, Otter Bitter and Goddards Wight Squirrel (decent nick) as well as Taunton cider. We really liked it here, a proper locals pub with a nice atmosphere, good beer and a warm welcome. Recommended.

Update Jan 2013, Otter bitter plus Butcombe, Skinners Betty Stogs and Cotleigh Snowy Owl. Taunton Traditional on handpump for you cider heads out there. Never a bad pint here. Score upped a point as an extra beer now on.

Is Colin blowing his own trumpet with his sole review I wonder? Surely the only 10/10 pub is that unobtainable one of my dreams! Yes, the welcome was good, the service fine, and the ale excellent - but 10/10? no, just a 7.

The Brewers Arms has 3 guest beers as well as it's regular beer 'Otter' there are beer festivals in May (bank holiday weekend) and October. Dogs are welcome providing they're kept on a lead. In the Courtyard there is a covered area with heating and a beer garden at the rear of the pub. Many events are supported by the pub, including the local carnival which takes place in September. A great pub and well worth a visit.

Village centre local pub with adjacent restaurant known as The Old Bakehouse. A regular award winner with local CAMRA it does serve a good pint. Otter bitter is always available with 2 guests which are sourced from breweries nationwide. On my vist a Hereford beer and Milk Street Amarillo were available. A board above the bar shows what is coming next. A couple of TVs seem to show some kind of sport most of the time. The food is of good quality and there were a few dining midweek.
